The Weight of the Glass

Once upon a time a psychology professor walked around on a stage while teaching stress management principles to an auditorium filled with students.

As she raised a glass of water, everyone expected they’d be asked the typical “glass half empty or glass half full” question. Instead, with a smile on her face, the professor asked, “How heavy is this glass of water I’m holding?”

Students shouted out answers ranging from eight ounces to a couple pounds.

She replied, “From my perspective, the absolute weight of this glass doesn’t matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If I hold it for a minute or two, it’s fairly light. If I hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make my arm ache a little. If I hold it for a day straight, my arm will likely cramp up and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing me to drop the glass to the floor. In each case, the weight of the glass doesn’t change, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it feels to me.”

As the class shook their heads in agreement, she continued, “Your stresses and worries in life are very much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed – incapable of doing anything else until you drop them.”

The moral:

It’s important to remember to let go of your stresses and worries. No matter what happens during the day, as early in the evening as you can, put all your burdens down. Don’t carry them through the night and into the next day with you. If you still feel the weight of yesterday’s stress, it’s a strong sign that it’s time to put the glass down.

The Obituary -

I glanced over the obituary column for an online newspaper to see if anyone I knew had passed away. It isn’t likely I would personally know them, with such a small space allotted to deaths. I noticed they labeled it “Notable Deaths.” Do they not consider the other 150,000 people who died that day notable? Probably not, but their readers aren’t really interested in who died, unless they are family, friends, or famous. As an additional slap against the “not notable people” some names stay on that list for more than one day.

Being on that exclusive list might be meaningful to some people, but not those who have died. They have more important things on their mind. They are beginning an eternity of indescribable joy or unimaginable torment. That list doesn’t matter at all in the light of eternity. If honors don’t matter after you die, why do they matter so much when we are alive? I understand it is a way of keeping score, but the only winners are in Heaven and that is a gift.

I don’t mean to be disrespectful. There is nothing wrong with a nice write-up about our loved ones in a less exclusive place, like the community newspaper. It is an opportunity to show what the person did with their life and to be an encouragement to those who are left behind. The write-up isn’t for the deceased. You can neither help nor hurt them.

If death is so final, and the obituary so unimportant, what is the point of this story? We need to change our focus from the dead to the living. By the time a name shows up on the obituary, they are beyond our reach. If you want to cry for someone, cry for the living! Your heartfelt tears might touch their heart and make a difference.

Don’t dwell on those who are gone but turn your attention to the ones still with us. Maybe grieving loved ones will listen to a message of hope. Be gentle, but don’t waste the opportunity. Don’t let them agonize over what they might have done for the deceased but point them toward what they can do for the living! While they are pointing their loved ones to JESUS, He will change their hearts too! If their loved one was saved, you can reassure them of the joy of Heaven. Encourage them to consider their own eternity, so they can see their loved one again. Each of us must accept JESUS for ourselves and the passing of loved ones reminds us, this life will come to an end.

During their time of loss, you can let them know how much JESUS loves them. Be sure to tell them “God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16 KJV). That explains it all and the WORD has power to change hearts and lives! They still have a chance to accept JESUS but only while they are alive!

The Story of Richard Wurmbrand

“God, I know surely that You do not exist. But if perchance You exist, which I contest, it is not my duty to believe in You; it is Your duty to reveal Yourself to me.”

The young Jewish atheist who uttered that flippant prayer was Richard Wurmbrand, born in 1909 in Bucharest, Romania. Little did he know how completely God would answer him, call him to a life of service to Christ, and use him to raise up one of the strongest ministries in the world today that helps the persecuted church.

Salvation and Service

In 1938, in a remote Romanian village, an old German carpenter named Christian Wolfkes lay sick. The only person by his side giving aid and comfort was a Jewish follower of Christ. When Wolfkes recovered, he was so grateful to God that he prayed earnestly for the opportunity to share the gospel with a Jewish person. Although none lived in his village, still he prayed.

One day a young, newly married Jewish couple arrived on vacation. They were Richard and Sabina Wurmbrand. The carpenter enthusiastically gave Richard a Bible. Richard had read the Scriptures once but had gotten nothing from them. However, this time, his heart was stirred. He didn’t know why, until he learned the secret. The carpenter and his wife had spent many long hours every day praying for his salvation. “The Bible he gave me was written not so much in words, but in flames of love fired by his prayers,” Richard would write later.

The carpenter spoke about God’s unconditional love for the Jewish people (Dt. 7:6–7; Jer. 31:3), the Messianic fulfillments in Jesus, and Jesus’ purpose in coming to Earth: “For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved” (Jn. 3:17). The Spirit of God freed Richard’s heart, and he believed. Sabina also came to faith and was so deeply changed she soon brought others to the Messiah.

Angel at Presbyterian Hospital

A couple of Wednesdays ago, I got an evening phone call from the pediatric ICU at Presbyterian Hospital, in Charlotte, NC, where I work as a child life specialist. Usually when they call at night, it means something bad has happened. This, however, was different. My coworker told me that the most amazing thing had just happened and she just had to call to tell me.

We had a patient who has really grown up in and out of the hospital. All the staff knows her and her family. She had been in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for about a month, and had been intubated - on life support. She was not doing well. The doctors had approached mom about taking her off life support the Saturday before. Mom was okay with it, and said that she’d been through so much and if was her time to go she wanted to honor that. So they had taken her off.

It was Wednesday and she was still alive. Amazing. The doctors approached mom about taking off her oxygen mask. Mom was supportive, and began praying over her daughter. The mother of another young patient who was in the bed next to her began praying with her.

The nurse practitioner went to the nurses’ station to chart that she had taken off the oxygen mask. While doing so, she looked up at the security monitor that videotapes the double doors leading into the PICU. It records anyone who may be waiting outside the doors to get in since it is a secure unit. She saw a man standing there, and it looked a little funny to her, so she decided to walk down the hall to open the double doors personally. When she opened them, no one was standing there.

She walked back down to the nurses station to finish charting, assuming he had walked away, but saw him still standing there on the monitor. So she opened the doors with a button near the nurses’ station and leaned over to see him walk in, but no one was standing there.

She pulled over another nurse and both stood staring at this man on the monitor and opening the doors to find no one there. The nurse practitioner leaned in closely to look at the man on the monitor and said, ‘Oh my gosh. That’s an angel. You can see his wings!’

They said that the sun starting shining so brightly and the whole PICU was strangely filled with light. They said he was a tall man and you could see wings behind him.

They pulled over all the staff of the PICU and the two praying mothers and everyone was staring at this man on the monitor and opening the doors to find no one there. Crying, everyone pulled out their camera phones to take pictures, but no one could get it to show up on their camera. The mother of the girl pulled out her camera phone and finally got a picture of the angel who was guarding the doors to the PICU. He turned out as a man of light. I have attached the picture from her phone.

The girl was later discharged from the hospital to go home.

I’ll hear complaints that the sanctuary is too hot or cold. That the chairs are uncomfortable. That the service ran too long. The music wasn’t their style. The kids’ ministry didn’t have enough activities. The coffee wasn’t their favorite. There weren’t enough people “like them.” They didn’t feel connected.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, a group of believers gathers in a jungle clearing under pouring rain. They’re singing with joy—no chairs, no sound system, no air conditioning. Just a passion for Jesus.

Somewhere else, underground churches are whispering hymns for fear of being discovered. In a desert village, believers walk miles barefoot for a two-hour gathering around a hand-dug firepit.

No one’s clock-watching. No one’s checking for padded pews. They’re just thankful to be together.

And maybe that’s the real tragedy.

We have more resources than any generation before us—Bibles, buildings, music, budgets. But we are poor in joy. Discontent in our comfort. Numb in a culture of spiritual excess.

We shop for churches like we shop for shoes—style, fit, comfort. But the early church didn’t gather for convenience. They gathered out of desperation. They didn’t need stage lights or skinny jeans. They needed Jesus. And they were willing to face prison or death for the joy of being with other believers, singing praises to the one true King, JESUS!

So while we complain about thermostats, others are risking their lives for Christ. While we sit surrounded by resources, they worship with none.

Maybe the room isn’t too cold. Maybe our hearts are.

Think about it!

The Dean Schooled Them
One night four college kids stayed out late, partying and having a good time. They paid no mind to the test they had scheduled for the next day and didn’t study. In the morning, they hatched a plan to get out of taking their test. They covered themselves with grease and dirt and went to the Dean’s office. Once there, they said they had been to a wedding the previous night and on the way back they got a flat tire and had to push the car back to campus.

The Dean listened to their tale of woe and thought. He offered them a retest three days later. They thanked him and accepted his offer.hat time.

When the test day arrived, they went to the Dean. The Dean put them all in separate rooms for the test. They were fine with this since they had all studied hard. Then they saw the test. It had 2 questions.

1) Your Name __________ (1 Points)

2) Which tire burst? __________ (99 Points)
Options – (a) Front Left (b) Front Right (c) Back Left (d) Back Right

The lesson: always be responsible and make wise decisions.
