September 28 — Family Day. ❤️
The idea is beautiful: give families time to sit down, eat together, and reconnect. That is why government offices are given time off from 1:00 to 5:00 PM.
But it also makes me think about the workers who don't get that same opportunity.
Government employees have certain benefits and protections when work is suspended, including during severe weather. while for many private-sector workers, suspension depends on the employer. And when work stops, “no work, no pay” can mean lost income.
So while some families are given four hours to be together, others may still be at work simply because they cannot afford not to be.
Family time should not be a privilege enjoyed only by those who happen to work in the government.
Perhaps Family Day should also remind us to think about how we can make family time possible for all workers, without forcing them to choose between being with their families and earning their day's income. ❤️
