It goes deeper than simply finding cheap clothes.

Baguioโ€™s ukay-ukay culture grew from a practical need for affordable clothing into a distinct part of the cityโ€™s everyday commerce. The local term โ€œwagwaganโ€ comes from the Ilocano wagwagโ€”the act of shaking or dusting something offโ€”which perfectly describes the familiar experience of going through piles of clothes in search of a good find.

What made it even more significant was the cityโ€™s role in helping the trade expand beyond Baguio. Research on the industry documents how secondhand goods entered local markets through international networks and were distributed to Baguio and other parts of the country.

And that is why ukay-ukay became more than a place to shop. For some, it meant affordable clothing. For others, it became a way to discover vintage pieces, international brands, and unexpected finds without paying full retail prices.
