15 THINGS EVERY GEN X KID REMEMBERS...

1. Making Mix Tapes Was a Sacred Art Form: Sitting by the radio with a blank cassette, fingers poised over the “record” button, praying the DJ wouldn’t talk over the intro.

2. Phone Calls Were an Olympic Sport: Untangling that spiral cord like your life depended on it, stretching it into a closet for privacy—only to be interrupted when someone picked up the other line.

3. After-School Snacks: Pop-Tarts, Twinkies, Fruit Roll-Ups, and cereals with more sugar than cake.

4. Smoking Everywhere Was Just...Normal: Airplanes. Restaurants. Doctor’s offices. It was inescapable, and somehow just part of the wallpaper.

5. MTV Actually Played Music Videos. Your entire social status could be judged by your VHS collection, vinyl records, or the number of movie posters plastered on your bedroom wall.

6. Playground Equipment Was Basically a Daredevil Training Ground: Metal slides that could cook an egg in summer and jungle gyms that were essentially lawsuits waiting to happen.

7. Waiting an Entire Week to Watch Your Favorite TV Show: No streaming, no binging. You planned your entire evening around "Family Ties" or "Cheers," and if you missed it, tough luck.

8. The Mind-Blowing Technology of the Sony Walkman: Personal music that you could take ANYWHERE. Wearing those foam headphones was peak coolness.

9. Card Catalogs Were a True Quest: Finding a book required detective skills and actual alphabetizing knowledge. Google had nothing on us.

10. Mall Culture Was a Legit Lifestyle: You didn’t go to shop—you went to be seen. Orange Julius, Spencer’s, and hours in the arcade.

11. Saturday Morning Cartoons Were a Sacred Ritual: Waking up early, surrounded by cereal, watching "The Jetsons" with zero adult interruption.

12. The Pure Excitement of a New Video Rental: Spending hours in Blockbuster, arguing about which movie to rent, and the genuine thrill of bringing home a VHS for the weekend. Be kind, rewind.

13. Passing Notes Was an Art Form: Complex folds, secret codes, and stealth deliveries. Texting could never compete.

14. Actual Answering Machines with Personalized Messages: Creating the perfect outgoing message was a personality statement. Bonus points if you had a funny skit or recorded a song.

15. Pay Phones and Collect Calls Were Strategic Ops: Calling home collect? Say your full message during the name recording to avoid the charges: “PickMeUpAtSixBye!”

Not for the Kill but they shoot each other.
(Shared snaps by and thier student interns)
A grand celebration such as Baguio City’s Flower Festival is one occasion when thousands of cameras and smartphones are aimed at common subjects but surprisingly, no snapped image comes out exactly alike.

Press cameramen and photographers when not not aiming and focusing at their subjects often turn to their fellow shooters for selfies, groupies or some candid moments.

Photo Encounter:
Photography is not just about aiming a camera to a subject, pressing its button and bringing it to a lab for processing and printing.
It is far more than that and listening to seasoned photographers like George Tapan talk about his craft is truly enlightening especially when you hear him say that a good photograph has a soul.

The Panagbenga is one season in Baguio where neophyte hobbyists, press photographers and master photographers get to converge and even rub elbows over a cup of coffee like the arranged 4-hour lecture by George at the Fog Studio.
Teaming up with George is another veteran and award winning lensman Edwin Tuyay with Lee Llamas, Angie de Silva and Masho Ledda who facilitated the 4 hour lecture.
Adopted Baguio media and my fellow Tomasino Noli Gabilo was there together with Voltaire Fernandez Domingo who used to cover big events like Presidential visits in Baguio. (with photos/selfies by Noli Gabilo and Edwin Tuyay)
