On August 8, a 39-year-old amateur boxer in Japan collapsed after sparring and underwent surgery for a subdural hematoma.

In amateur boxing, athletes with a history of serious medical issues are barred from returning to competition. It was later revealed that the 39-year-old boxer had been hospitalized back in 2008 for a minor subdural hematoma.

Following recent ring deaths, the federation will now require CT and MRI scans for boxers over 35 or returning after long absences.

Puerto Rican Minimumweight star 🇵🇷Oscar Collazo (12-0, 9KOs) has yet to get past Filipino challenger 🇵🇭Jayson Vayson (14-1-1, 8KOs) on September 20, but word is already going around that Collazo’s next fight could be another unification.

Collazo was successful in his first unification bout last year, stopping Thammanoon Niyomtrong by TKO in the 7th round in Saudi Arabia to unify the WBA and WBO titles.

While some may see Vayson as just another tune-up, he’s determined to prove otherwise.

During a courtesy visit by World Title Challenger Jayson Vayson’s team to Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco J. Rivera, the possibility of establishing a GAB office in Baguio City to further strengthen the professional sports scene in Northern Luzon was discussed. Chairman Rivera expressed his openness to the idea.

Currently, GAB has extension offices in Mindanao and Visayas:

Mindanao
• Zamboanga Extension Office
• Davao Extension Office
• Cagayan de Oro Extension Office

Visayas
• Cebu Extension Office
• Bacolod Extension Office

In Luzon, only the head office in Makati serves the region.

A GAB office in Baguio would encourage more professional fighters, certified referees, and judges in the north. With professional athletes, officials, and GAB representatives all nearby, logistics would be much easier, costs would be lower, and more events could take place.

Very humble 🇵🇭Jayson Vayson has always shown great respect for his fellow Filipino fighters, which made it difficult for him to accept an eliminator against top-rated compatriot 🇵🇭Reggie Suganob. He had no choice at the time, since declining would have pushed his ranking down to the bottom of the top 10 or even lower. So when the opportunity came to face 🇵🇷Oscar Collazo on the same date in California, it felt like an answered prayer.

The September 20 showdown will see Vayson drop to 105 pounds to compete for the WBO, WBA, and Ring Magazine Minimumweight Titles. He knows Collazo is a tough challenge, but scoring a win could be his ticket to stardom.

That is why he is working tirelessly in training, with his team giving their all to prepare him for the biggest fight of his career.
