Lined with green tarp tents on Sundays, Baguio City has been attracting tourists to its heart with the alluring market of you-name-it's — crochet trinkets, second-hand bookstores, clothing stalls of on-trend fashion, but food stalls seem to be the most abundant.

Take the celebration of the Panagbenga Festival. Yearly, month-long festivities are held to celebrate the season of flowers, and though cultural performances are featured and scattered throughout the celebration, does its presence lack in its point of highlighting the vibrancy of Cordilleran culture; or does its presence so suffice in encapsulating the true essence of Cordilleran tradition? In perspective: does the abundance of shawarma, mango graham shakes, and Ilocos empanada stalls echo the essence of Cordillera, or does the tradition of the community dance do enough of the job?

Passing the notoriously difficult UPCAT is the golden dream for almost every fresh highschool graduate in the Philippines, and with a passing rate of ‘roughly 10 percent’ according to UP President Angelo Jimenez, many hopefuls have to let go of this golden dream and face the harsh reality that UP cannot cater to everyone, at least not through the regular admissions process.

While it may seem like the end of the road for University of the Philippines (UP) hopefuls once they receive the “Thank you!” prompt when the The University of the Philippines College Admission Test (UPCAT) results are out, a glimmer of hope remains as other means of getting into the university have successfully aided students who have failed the UPCAT.

HAPPENING NOW: Students gather at the Sarmiento Hall for the 2024 Student Council Elections' (SCE) UPakan — a moderated debate between the standard bearers of each slate.

This SCE, only the slates of the Alliance of Concerned Students (ACS) and Alternatibong Katipunan ng mga Mag-aaral sa UP (AKMA UP) have standard bearers.

Because of limited seating capacity, the event is also being livestreamed at the UPB Cafeteria and on UPB Outcrop's page.

“So ‘yong UPBids is sort of like inspired by ELBids pero it rooted from my pursuit of selling my own clothes,” said Valenciano.

And that was the beginning of it all. From a simple want of selling her own clothes, it created and cultivated a whole new community in UPB.

From then on, the community formed by UPBB continued to grow in number and the culture of selling and buying secondhand clothes from fellow peers integrated itself into UPB. Besides clothes, other miscellaneous items are also sold by UPB students; from makeup, skincare products, stuffed toys, food to even gadgets. UPBB has become an avenue where students of UPB give a renewed purpose and life to their old items, be it clothes or something else.

While Women's Month may have ended, who says celebrating women is confined to just a month? UP Baguio's Program for Indigenous Cultures (PIC), in partnership with the College of Arts and Communication, has launched the "Abante Babae" art exhibit at the Darnay Demetillo Art Space.

Darwin Conrad Delizo, the coach of the University of the Philippines Baguio’s Men’s Basketball team (UPB MBT), has called for providing more support to student-athletes and offering sports programs following the university’s stint to Cordillera Administrative Region Association of State Universities and Colleges (CARASUC) athletic meet.

In an interview, Delizo said he believes offering such programs would allow student-athletes and varsities to focus more on core sports courses and require UPB to hire more coaches for the Human Kinetics Program (HKP).

“Malaking boost ‘yan sa UPB. Malaking tulong ‘yon. Magiging additional advertisement sa school and makapag-hikayat ng athletes to study in UPB,” Delizo added.
