With the recent report of a 10% tuition fee increase at the University of Baguio, this has put many students and families, specifically incoming freshmen, and transferries that are the main subject of the tuition increase on edge. However, could this hike actually be a real benefit, or just another financial dilemma for them to require?
In accordance with the University of Baguioโs recent announcement, this has left many students, especially those students who will be about to enter the university, stunned. As most students struggle to balance academics and part-time work, the changes for increasing tuition fee may impact their options in choosing the university as their tertiary school. Many are sharing their thoughts, and while opinions vary from one another, one thing is clear: financial stability is a big worry, especially for the freshmen who are just starting to conquer university life.
For the other side of the issues, the University of Baguio Supreme Student Council announced that a zero percent (0%) tuition fee increase is not possible, and the major reason is for the compensation of faculty and staff, to maintain quality education and stable service for the students, and to encourage the experienced instructors to stay in the institution. The clear reason that most students from different schools experience the increase in the tuition, especially the SIHTM, SIT, and SBAA, is the international accreditations. The School of Engineering and Architecture has similarly gained the opportunity for this and let students go, such as the International Short Course Program in Engineering and Architecture at Universitas Amikom Yogyakarta, Indonesia. With this topic, some laboratory fees are affected such as for these schools: SBAA, SCJPS, SOD, SIT, SEA, and even the graduate schools. However, it is said that not all laboratory fees are objected to for a ten percent(10%) increase, since some of them are 5%, and none at all.
With regard to the concern, despite the increasing tuition fee report, slow WiFi connection is frustratingly added to the fuel of most of the students' rage. Fortunately, this dilemma was raised by the SSC, and the administration acknowledged the suggestion. However, will this really be accommodated in the future? Or just another issue that will be up in the air?
It's worth mentioning that this isn't the first time that the University of Baguio has increased tuition fees. In recent past years, students have faced similar increases; however, some of the students claim that they haven't seen corresponding improvements in facilities like classrooms, services, and even the overall quality of education. Some classrooms remain outdated, WiFi network connectivity is still a dilemma, and student services haven't shown significant improvements. This recent history of unseen promises fuels skepticism about the current increase, making students and their families wonder: will this hike be any different, or just more of the same?
Since the tuition fee increase is already decided and confirmed, students demand transparency. If there are no visible and timely improvements, the tuition hike risks being perceived as unjustified, causing a distrust and dissatisfaction for the quality of the institution. Thus, with the potential benefits of the increase looking promising, they must be matched and related by the improvements.
Overall, a ten percent (10%) tuition increase holds the promise of improving educational quality and student service support at the University of Baguioโif, and only if, it translates into real, felt improvements. Students and their families deserve to view their expenses reflected in better resources, facilities, services, and quality of education. Thus, they call for accountability as much as for optimism.
