The University of Baguio (UB) School of Information Technology (SIT) held an orientation for the 1st-year and 2nd-year students on August 28, 2026, themed โConnect, Learn, Advance.โ The activity aimed to help students become more familiar with the University, its different offices, available services, and, more importantly, policies. It also gave students an opportunity to learn where they can seek assistance for their academic, personal, and student-related concerns.
The program commenced with a welcome from Dr. Ellen Halover, Dean of the School of Information Technology, who explained the meaning behind the theme โConnect, Learn, Advance.โ The orientation then introduced students to representatives from various University offices, which allowed them to learn more about the people and services available to support them throughout their university experience.
Among the offices represented were the Office of Student Affairs (OSA), Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD), Medical and Dental Clinic (MDC), Academic Resource Center (ARC), Security Office, Library Services, Student Accounting Office (SAO), Management Information Systems (MIS), Research, Innovation, Extension, and Community Outreach (RIECO), and Linkages.
The orientation covered different areas of student life, including academic and administrative concerns, counseling and health services, campus safety, library resources, payment matters, information systems, community initiatives, and international opportunities. Rather than focusing only on classroom concerns, the activity showed students the range of services they can access within the University.
Another important thing discussed during orientation was understanding the proper channels and procedures for addressing concerns. Students were reminded that different matters are handled by specific offices.
While OSA also emphasized the importance of students feeling that they belong in the University community, ending the discussion with the message, โAs UB students, you always belong.โ This served as a reminder that students have people and offices within the University that they can approach when they need guidance or assistance.
The activity highlighted the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by contributing to a learning environment where students have access to information and support that can assist them in their education. It also relates to SDG 4.7, which promotes knowledge and skills that encourage responsible participation in society.
For the students, the orientation served as an opportunity to become familiar with the University beyond the classrooms. It helped them understand where to seek assistance and become aware of the policies and resources available to them.
The SIT Orientation reflected UBโs effort to help students adjust and become active members of the University community. With the theme โConnect, Learn, Advance,โ the activity gave students support and opportunities available to them, and moved forward with a better understanding of the community they are now part of.
