Villanueva: Bulacan primed as hub for PH food security projects. By: Omar Padilla and Evelyn Tenorio

Senator Joel Villanueva said the province of Bulacan is all geared up to become a strategic economic hub in the country with its diverse economy, skilled workforce, and faster access to free ports in Subic and Bataan.

“Bulacan is a natural extension of Metro Manila going to the north. The rails are coming, the airport is being constructed, more roads are being built. Development has nowhere to go but Bulacan,” he described his home province.

Villanueva raised the potential of the province hosting some of the food security projects approved by the Board of Investments as of end-June this year.

The 31 projects, granted Green Lane certifications, are worth around P18.7 billion and are estimated to create 7,000 jobs.

The Green Lane was established through an executive order to streamline, expedite, and automate government approval and registration processes for strategic investments.

Villanueva said the projects include modern breeder farms, a coconut processing facility, and a cold storage facility that can be set up in Bulacan.

Data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed that in 2023, Bulacan has the fourth largest economy outside Metro Manila in terms of share to the national gross domestic product, contributing P631.64 billion.

The Central Luzon (CL) Region is the largest producer of rice and livestock in the country. Palay production of Bulacan alone reached 387,699 metric tons in 2021, fourth in the CL Region, based on the 2022 CL Regional Social and Economic Trend. Meanwhile, Bulacan’s hog production is also third in the region in 2021 at 21,597 heads.

The province can benefit from more cold storage facilities for aquaculture products for domestic consumption and export of prawn, crabs and milkfish. Bulacan is also known for processing gold into jewelry.

Villanueva said the Bulacan local government should continue to prepare for the upsurge of investments by upskilling workers and priming businesses for a more competitive landscape.

“All hands should be on deck, from the local government, to the academe, the business sector, and other stakeholders. We want to show we are ready for every opportunity,” Villanueva said.

5 yrs of River cleanup: SMC removes 5M tons of waste. By: Omar Padilla and Evelyn Tenorio

San Miguel Corporation (SMC) recently marked five years of cleaning up major rivers and river systems — a continuing effort that has, as of end-June, removed around 8.5 million metric tons of silt and solid waste from 10 key waterways in and around Metro Manila.

Launched in 2020, the initiative, dubbed Better Rivers PH, aims to reduce river pollution and help prevent flooding by restoring and dredging rivers and improving their flow.

According to SMC Chairman and CEO Ramon S. Ang, the company has already cleared over 161 kilometers of river channels, and the work is far from over.

The waste and silt — removed from the Tullahan, Pasig, and San Juan Rivers; rivers in Bulacan and Pampanga; the San Isidro, Biñan, and Tunasan Rivers in Laguna, and waterways in Navotas and Parañaque — have significantly increased the carrying capacity of these river systems.

This has helped lessen the risk of severe flooding in surrounding communities, by enabling floodwaters to be drained to Manila Bay more effectively. Without this intervention, many of these waterways, made shallow by years of silt and debris buildup, would frequently overflow and inundate communities, Ang said.

The effort has also reduced foul odors coming from rivers and, in some cases, encouraged the return of fish, owing to the removal of decomposing waste and garbage from the river beds.

“Because of many contributing and aggravating factors, flooding continues to be a major risk for many of our cities and provinces. For San Miguel, we cannot afford to just stand by and do nothing because in the end, our economy and all of us, suffer. That’s why we’ve been working non-stop these last five years to help clean and restore our rivers,” Ang said.

“Through cooperation with the national and local governments and other stakeholders, we’ve now managed to increase the carrying capacities of our major rivers. But a lot still needs to be done, including in changing mindsets and discouraging the throwing of wastes in our waterways. We are committed to continue working with stakeholders and doing our part every way we can,” he added.

SMC’s river cleanup initiative, which does year-round work at targeted rivers, is part of its broader social responsibility agenda, and is aligned with SMC’s major sustainability initiatives, which includes a drive towards addressing critical water issues.

Fully-funded and undertaken by SMC, the program comes at no cost to government and taxpayers, and is done in close coordination with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and local government units.

From its early efforts to clean up the Tullahan, Pasig, and San Juan Rivers, SMC’s river cleanup initiative has extended northwards to Bulacan and Pampanga, and the south, to rivers in Paranaque and Laguna.

Last June, it completed the cleanup of Tunasan River in Laguna, where it removed 53,774 tons of silt and wastes.

This is on top of its earlier efforts to clean up the Binan River (87,899 tons removed) and San Isidro River in San Pedro (417,044 tons removed). The company is set start cleaning up two more rivers in the province.

For updates and more details on this initiative, visit the official website at betterrivers.com.ph and its page, Better Rivers PH.

SM Bulacan Malls Mark National Flag Day, Signal Start of Patriotism Season Until June 12
By: Evelyn Tenorio

BULACAN, Philippines - With flags raised and hearts full of pride, SM malls across Bulacan joined the country in commemorating National Flag Day on May 28 — a meaningful start to the two-week countdown to Philippine Independence Day on June 12.

At exactly 8:00 a.m., simultaneous flag-raising ceremonies were held at SM City Marilao, SM City Baliwag, and SM Center Pulilan. The morning observance gathered mall employees, partner agencies, tenants, and security personnel in a unified tribute to the Philippine flag - the enduring symbol of the country's freedom, unity, and identity. Shoppers and guests also paused to reflect on the flag's legacy and meaning.

The activity kicks off a nationwide tradition encouraging Filipinos to proudly display the national flag in homes, workplaces, and establishments — a practice rooted in Presidential Proclamation No. 374, which marks May 28 as National Flag Day. The date honors the first unfurling of the Philippine flag in 1898 following the victorious Battle of Alapan.

After the singing of the national anthem, SM mall officials and security teams led the "Panunumpa sa Watawat ng Pilipinas," reaffirming their patriotic commitment and encouraging civic pride among mallgoers and staff.

In the days leading up to June 12, SM malls in Bulacan will mount a variety of educational exhibits and interactive activities designed to promote historical awareness and foster national pride, particularly among the youth.

This initiative is in line with Executive Order No. 179 issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos, which extends the observance of National Flag Day through Independence Day - urging every Filipino to honor the nation's heritage and renew their love for country.

SM Bulacan malls'
participation underscores their role not only as shopping destinations but also as pillars of community engagement and cultural expression. Through these civic efforts, SM continues to inspire unity, patriotism, and a deeper connection to the Filipino identity.

COMELEC Rolls Out Mall Voting at SM City Baliwag
By: Evelyn Tenorio

May 12, 2025 — A steady stream of voters, notably senior citizens and persons with disabilities, filled SM City Baliwag, as the Commission on Elections (COMELEC) and SM Supermalls rolled out the Mall Voting Program (MVP) in 20 malls nationwide. Designed to make the voting process more inclusive and accessible, the initiative was met with overwhelmingly positive feedback from voters.

As early as 5:00 am, mall operations and election officials reported a strong early morning turnout, particularly from seniors and PWDs who praised the comfort, ease of navigation, and shorter queues.

With escalators, elevators, ample signage, and well-ventilated voting areas, SM City Baliwag provided a comfortable and efficient experience for voters. Mall marshals and security personnel ensured order while COMELEC personnel manned the process with full compliance to election protocols.

The turnout reflects growing public support for mall-based voting, a move seen to lessen the logistical and physical challenges often faced in traditional polling stations, especially during the summer heat.

COMELEC officials stationed in Baliwag said the initiative not only provided an ideal voting environment but also encouraged participation among groups that previously found the voting process physically demanding.

SM Supermalls has long collaborated with government agencies to offer essential services to the public. From passport renewals to national ID registrations, the mall's Government Service Express centers have proven effective in integrating convenience with public service. Today's successful rollout of mall voting builds on that foundation.

With polls open until 7:00 PM, officials continue to encourage voters assigned to the mall precinct to participate before closing time. Valid IDs are required, and assistance is readily available on site.

SM Supermalls and ASP ink partnership for autism-inclusive employment
By: Evelyn Tenorio

MANILA, Philippines-SM Supermalls has partnered with the Autism Society Philippines (ASP) to create work opportunities for individuals on the autism spectrum and help them succeed in the retail industry. This collaboration reflects SM's enduring commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion across its operations. This newly inked partnership builds on that legacy, ensuring more meaningful, sustainable roles for talents on the spectrum within the SM ecosystem. SM Markets pioneered autism-inclusive hiring back in 2016.

A ceremonial signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was held at Book Nook in SM Podium, marking the beginning of an inspiring new chapter in inclusive employment. Book Nook, a flagship community learning hub under SM Cares, will soon welcome individuals on the spectrum as Book Nook concierges, bringing SM's inclusive vision to life in a space that champions learning, connection, and belonging.

"Book Nook was always meant to be a space where everyone feels they belong," Ms. Shereen T. Sy shared. "Through this initiative, we bring that vision into sharper focus- creating not just a library, but a living story of inclusion, empowerment, and opportunity."

"The Autism Society Philippines is excited about this collaboration," said Ms. Mona Magno Veluz, Country Manager of ASP Autism Works. "We need more companies carving a space for Filipinos with disabilities in their businesses, allowing them to contribute and grow."

The partnership is part of SM Cares' broader advocacy for inclusive employment, which aims to create work environments where people with disabilities are welcomed and celebrated for their unique strengths.

"At SM, inclusion is more than a policy-it's our purpose," said Mr. Steven T. Tan, President of SM
Supermalls. "This partnership with ASP reaffirms our commitment to being a 'Mall for All'— a place where everyone can succeed and feel they belong."

SM Supermalls continues to redefine inclusive, compassionate public spaces— not just in its malls but in communities throughout the Philippines. Its strategic partnership with the ASP ensures that they are guided in best practices for recruiting, developing, and retaining talents on the autism spectrum.
