Today, October 10, the University of San Jose - Recoletos (USJ-R), Balamban Campus, celebrated the Sci-Math Culminationโcarrying the theme โScience and Math: Where Curiosity Meets Calculation.โ The day consisted of the Sci-Math Quiz Bowl, a team-based competition that tested the studentsโ knowledge and quick thinking in both subjects; the Mr. and Ms. Ecology Pageant, where participants proudly wore costumes made by their respective grade levels out of recyclable materials in support of environmental awareness and sustainability; and the highly anticipated Math-Sayaw contest, which combined rhythm, creativity, and mathematical concepts in one vibrant performance.
At exactly 7:25 in the morning, students gathered at the quadrangle for the morning assembly before proceeding to the La Consolaciรณn Chapel for the Institutional Mass. After the mass, the Sci-Math Quiz Bowl took place at the Grade School Covered Court, with participants representing different grade levels: Grades 3 to 6 for the Elementary Level, Grades 7 to 10 for the Junior High School Level, and Grades 11 to 12โboth Regular and Afternoon Shiftโfor the Senior High School Level. The competition fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and a sense of healthy academic rivalry among the students, setting the tone for the rest of the dayโs celebration.
After the lunch break, the Josenians gathered once again at the Grade School Covered Court for the Program Proper, which started at exactly 1:30 PM. The program began with a prayer and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Afterwards, the School Director / Principal, Rev. Fr. Raul M. Buhay, OAR, delivered an inspiring message about the importance of science and mathematics in daily life. He also reminded everyone to remain calm and vigilant following the quake felt early that morning. After his message, the hosts introduced the judges for the dayโs competitions: Mr. Jay Almocera, Ms. Kelly Ardona, and Mr. Jovito Villacin Jr. from Tsuneishi Technical Services Philippines (TTSP). Soon after, the candidates for Mr. and Ms. Ecology graced the stage and introduced themselves to the judges.
Truly, the highlight of the event was the enthusiasm and cheers of the Josenians as the candidates confidently shared their meaningful and impactful advocacies. In line with this, the Senior High School students from Grades 11 and 12โboth Regular and Afternoon Shiftsโdelivered impressive performances during the MathSayaw competition, wowing the audience with their creativity, energy, and coordination. Their routines reflected not only their talent but also their ability to blend art and academics in an engaging way.
After the lively Math-Sayaw performances, the Mr. and Ms. Ecology candidates showcased their stunning costumes made by their respective grade levels. Each attire highlighted the use of recycled materials such as plastic bottles, paper, and other reusable items, promoting innovation and environmental consciousness. This was followed by a special collaboration performance by Ms. Eyra Sewane, a Filipino teacher, and Princess Elijah Manso, a Grade 12 student, who impressed the crowd with their duet performance. Afterwards, the host engaged the audience with fun trivia questions, which added excitement and interaction to the program. The awarding of certificates for the winners of the Slogan and Poster Making Contests for both the JHS and SHS levels came next, recognizing the studentsโ creativity and artistic expression.
The creative and wonderful performances, along with the overwhelming efforts of the Josenians, captivated both the judges and the audience. Here are the students who emerged as winners in todayโs event:
