Earlier today, students, teachers, and staff of the University of San Jose - Recoletos (USJ-R), Balamban Campus, together with the school director and principal, Rev. Fr. Raul M. Buhay, OAR, headed to northern Cebu to deliver relief goods to families affected by the recent earthquakes.

In the name of Arcores Filipinas, the solidarity network of the Recoletos, USJ-R Balamban took its turn to show concern and care for the brethren affected by the earthquake in northern Cebu. With a 15-member team, the group distributed a total of 600 packs of rice and toiletries and 48 containers of water, with each family receiving a gallon of water, 5 kilograms of rice, and essential personal items to help meet their immediate needs. Relief efforts reached the residents of Abante, Tabuelan (140); Daan Tabogon (200); Paypay, Medellin (75); and Binghaw, Daanbantayan (185).

Seeing the situation of our fellow Filipinos reminds us that even a simple act of kindness, such as donating goods, can go a long way in helping people get back on their feet little by little. As Josenians, let us continue to embody the spirit of compassion and service, always remembering that true education goes beyond the classroomโ€”it is lived out through acts of love, generosity, and solidarity with those in need.

Following the recent earthquake that affected several parts of the Visayas region, we continue to prioritize the safety and well-being of our students and the entire Josenian community.

As directed by our School Director, face-to-face classes are temporarily suspended until it is declared safe to resume. In the meantime, we will shift to asynchronous learning to ensure that education continues and that every student stays on track.

Teachers will then be providing lessons and activities that can be accomplished at home through our designated learning platforms.

We ask for everyoneโ€™s understanding, cooperation, and patience as we move through this challenging time together.

Stay safe, Josenians! ๐Ÿ’š

Today, October 10, the University of San Jose - Recoletos (USJ-R), Balamban Campus, celebrated the Sci-Math Culminationโ€”carrying the theme โ€œScience and Math: Where Curiosity Meets Calculation.โ€ The day consisted of the Sci-Math Quiz Bowl, a team-based competition that tested the studentsโ€™ knowledge and quick thinking in both subjects; the Mr. and Ms. Ecology Pageant, where participants proudly wore costumes made by their respective grade levels out of recyclable materials in support of environmental awareness and sustainability; and the highly anticipated Math-Sayaw contest, which combined rhythm, creativity, and mathematical concepts in one vibrant performance.

At exactly 7:25 in the morning, students gathered at the quadrangle for the morning assembly before proceeding to the La Consolaciรณn Chapel for the Institutional Mass. After the mass, the Sci-Math Quiz Bowl took place at the Grade School Covered Court, with participants representing different grade levels: Grades 3 to 6 for the Elementary Level, Grades 7 to 10 for the Junior High School Level, and Grades 11 to 12โ€”both Regular and Afternoon Shiftโ€”for the Senior High School Level. The competition fostered teamwork, critical thinking, and a sense of healthy academic rivalry among the students, setting the tone for the rest of the dayโ€™s celebration.

After the lunch break, the Josenians gathered once again at the Grade School Covered Court for the Program Proper, which started at exactly 1:30 PM. The program began with a prayer and the singing of the Philippine National Anthem. Afterwards, the School Director / Principal, Rev. Fr. Raul M. Buhay, OAR, delivered an inspiring message about the importance of science and mathematics in daily life. He also reminded everyone to remain calm and vigilant following the quake felt early that morning. After his message, the hosts introduced the judges for the dayโ€™s competitions: Mr. Jay Almocera, Ms. Kelly Ardona, and Mr. Jovito Villacin Jr. from Tsuneishi Technical Services Philippines (TTSP). Soon after, the candidates for Mr. and Ms. Ecology graced the stage and introduced themselves to the judges.

Truly, the highlight of the event was the enthusiasm and cheers of the Josenians as the candidates confidently shared their meaningful and impactful advocacies. In line with this, the Senior High School students from Grades 11 and 12โ€”both Regular and Afternoon Shiftsโ€”delivered impressive performances during the MathSayaw competition, wowing the audience with their creativity, energy, and coordination. Their routines reflected not only their talent but also their ability to blend art and academics in an engaging way.

After the lively Math-Sayaw performances, the Mr. and Ms. Ecology candidates showcased their stunning costumes made by their respective grade levels. Each attire highlighted the use of recycled materials such as plastic bottles, paper, and other reusable items, promoting innovation and environmental consciousness. This was followed by a special collaboration performance by Ms. Eyra Sewane, a Filipino teacher, and Princess Elijah Manso, a Grade 12 student, who impressed the crowd with their duet performance. Afterwards, the host engaged the audience with fun trivia questions, which added excitement and interaction to the program. The awarding of certificates for the winners of the Slogan and Poster Making Contests for both the JHS and SHS levels came next, recognizing the studentsโ€™ creativity and artistic expression.

The creative and wonderful performances, along with the overwhelming efforts of the Josenians, captivated both the judges and the audience. Here are the students who emerged as winners in todayโ€™s event:

Yesterday, October 7, the world came together to honor and express gratitude to the educators who shape the minds of future generations. At the University of San Joseโ€“Recoletos (USJ-R), Balamban Campus, the Josenian community celebrated this special occasion by offering heartfelt gifts and organizing a relaxing retreat for teachers including massages, facials, lounging areas, and more.

Meanwhile, selected students took on the roles of โ€œLittle Teachers,โ€ handling classes and schedules in place of their assigned educators. This served as an empowering experience that allowed them to appreciate the dedication and hard work that comes with being a teacher.

Teachers are rightfully called our second parents because of their endless care, service, and wisdom. Whatโ€™s truly remarkable is how they instill optimism in us, guiding us toward our future dreams. We will forever cherish everything they have given us whether physically, emotionally, or intellectuallyโ€”for these are the foundations that help us grow.

So Josenians, one day, when you look back at your achievements and ask yourself, โ€œHow did I get here?,โ€ remember the mentors who helped shape your journey and be sure to give them the gratitude they deserve.

As the celebration ends, may we continue to honor our teachers not just on this day, but every day through respect, kindness, and the pursuit of excellence that reflects the lessons theyโ€™ve imparted.

Once again, Happy Teacherโ€™s Day!

Yesterday, Josenian volunteers went to Tabuelan, San Remigio, Medellin, and remote areas in Daanbantayan to distribute relief goods to families and communities affected by the 6.7-magnitude earthquake last October 2.

Even with the continuing aftershocks that have left many in fear and uncertainty, our fellow Cebuanos have shown resilience and the spirit of bayanihan. In these trying times, may we continue to draw strength from one another, extend a helping hand to those in need, and remain united as one Cebuano community.

Earlier today, the SSC officers, RAY de Balamban, and CARAS members, accompanied by fellow science teachers, advisers of the said organizations, and school director/principal Rev. Fr. Raul M. Buhay, OAR, organized an immersive Environmental Awareness Activity through River Trekking and Trash Picking at Brgy. Duangan, Balamban, Cebu. This initiative was held to promote environmental stewardship, raise awareness on climate action, and inspire students to take an active role in protecting creation.

Prior to the activity, the students attended an Ecological Input Recollection for student leaders and an orientation for the River Trekking at the Grade School AVR last October 2. Topics included climate change, the importance of proper waste segregation, the impact of human activities on ecosystems, and the role of young leaders in promoting sustainable practices.

The day began with a Holy Mass at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Balamban, Cebu. After the celebration, the participants boarded their vehicles and departed for Brgy. Duangan. Upon arrival at the jump-off point, a final safety briefing was conducted, followed by light warm-up exercises to prepare the group physically and mentally for the trek. The students then embarked on a guided river trek that featured meaningful stops:

โ€ข Mini-Bio Lecture โ€“ discussions led by science teachers on the diverse flora and fauna found in the area.
โ€ข Water Quality Observation โ€“ a simple yet insightful activity to understand the riverโ€™s health and its role in the ecosystem.
โ€ข Silent Reflection โ€“ a few moments of stillness to immerse in and appreciate the natural beauty and sounds of the environment.

The activity concluded with the segregation and weighing of collected trash, emphasizing the importance of waste management, followed by a group photo session to mark the dayโ€™s success.

Through this initiative, the participants not only learned more about ecological awareness but also lived out the values of care, responsibility, and action. The activity served as a reminder that protecting the environment is both a shared duty and a meaningful journey, one stepโ€”and one clean riverโ€”at a time.
