The provincial government of Bataan officially declared the province in the state of calamity on July 23, after days of torrential rains brought by the southwest monsoon (Habagat), intensified by Tropical Cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong.
Following a resolution passed by the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, authorities cited the urgent need for emergency response due to widespread flooding, landslides, property damage, and displaced residents.
According to DOST-PAGASA Abucay Station, a total of 832.9 millimeters of rainfall from July 17 to 23 poured all over Bataan, prompting the issuance of multiple weather warnings and widespread flooding.
Furthermore, several towns in Bataan also experienced significant damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure due to continuous heavy rainfall and flooding, while classes at all levels and non-calamity government operations were suspended for a week.
In line with the declaration, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) โ Bataan has announced a price freeze on all basic necessities effective until September 21, unless lifted earlier by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
Meanwhile, del Rosarians, who are mostly residents of flood-hit town of Limay reflected on how the calamity battered the province.
โSeeing Bataan placed under a state of calamity made me realize how difficult the situation is, especially for the poor, as flooding endangers lives and animals,โ said Jan Cedric Perona, a student from 12 STEM - Capricorn.
In addition, a teacher from the SHS faculty shared that the declaration of a state of calamity was justifiable considering the ongoing effects of the storms and southwest monsoon in Bataan.
โAng hiling ko lang na sana magamit sa tama ang pondo. Lahat sana ay makaramdam nito dahil lahat naman tayo ay apektado, binaha man o hindi at malapit man sa gobyerno o hindi,โ Julie Angel Serrano, a Biological Science teacher stated.
As the province faces the aftermath of this calamity, the provincial government urges all residents to remain vigilant, cooperate with authorities, and extend support to one another as Bataan moves toward recovery and safety.
