To equip Bataan Heroes College’s instructors and teachers with skills in dealing with students in distress, the Guidance and Counseling Office (GCO) on Friday organized a Psychological First Aid (PFA) training at the Conference Hall.
According to the resource speaker, Bernadine F. Poblete, anyone can administer PFA as long as they have proper knowledge and training in handling an affected individual.
Members of the Technical Assistance Group and the Gabay Bayani peer facilitators were also present during the training.
After a two-part learning session that tackled misconceptions about mental health, stress, and the dos and don’ts when a person is in distress, participants engaged in group activities simulating real-life situations.
Through the three-part training, the instructors, teachers, and students are expected to be able to provide psychological help as PFA providers.
“Sana ma-implement talaga natin sa bawat classroom. I’m looking forward na bawat estudyante na merong mga ganitong klaseng needs, mga mental health needs, who are going through distress, ay sana is mas ma-handle natin as teachers, mas ma-cater natin,” Poblete said.
“Kasi I am thinking na when it comes to education, it should be hollistic, ‘no? Hindi lang 'yung academic needs ng mga students 'yung kine-cater natin, as well as 'yung kanilang mga mental health needs,” she added.
Senior Guidance Associate Krisgie Punongbayan expressed hope that teachers and college instructors would become the kind of support the students need.
“Sa generation kasi ngayon, they call the generation very sensitive. So, in case of emergency, meron silang action. Hindi lang ‘Aw, naawa ako,’ ‘Aw, kawawa naman.’ They help them [with a] certain kind of action—kung ano talaga yung kailangan nilang gawin, ano ‘yung dapat gawin,” Punongbayan stated.
