TDN NEWS FEATURE | Bridging the Last Mile
In the far-flung communities of Eastern Visayas, going to school is not just a routine—it is a daily struggle.
Children walk for hours.
Some cross rivers.
Others take boats just to reach a classroom that may lack electricity, internet, or even enough chairs.
Now comes a promise of change.
On March 16, 2026, the Senate passed the GIDA Schools Act, championed by Bam Aquino, aiming to finally support schools in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas (GIDA).
📌 The goal:
✔️ Bring schools closer to learners
✔️ Improve classrooms and facilities
✔️ Support and retain teachers
✔️ Expand internet and digital access
For regions like Eastern Visayas, this could be transformative.
But the real question remains:
👉 Will funds reach the last mile?
👉 Will roads and infrastructure be completed?
👉 Will teachers stay?
Eastern Visayas has seen big promises before—especially after Typhoon Haiyan.
This time, communities are watching.
Because for thousands of students, education is not just about policy—
It’s about distance, access, and opportunity.
