For more than five decades, Diosdado “Tatay Ebang” Evangelista’s world was defined by the rhythm of the seasons, the weight of a plow, and the muddy waters of the rice paddies.
He knew the land like the back of his hand, but deep down, a quiet ambition simmered beneath his weathered skin. He didn't just want to till the soil; he wanted to master the science behind it.
He wanted to be a licensed Agriculturist.
To many, the idea of a 72-year-old grandfather hitting the books to review for a grueling national board exam seemed impractical.
When he didn't pass on his first attempt, critics and even well-meaning friends whispered that perhaps it was time to just rest and leave the studying to the youth.
But Tatay Ebang’s hands, calloused from decades of hard labor, were not built for giving up.
He knew that seeds do not sprout overnight, and a harvest requires enduring both the scorching sun and the heavy rains.
Treating his initial failure not as a defeat, but merely as a storm to weather, he bent his back once more. He spent his days working the fields and his nights under the dim glow of a lamp, trading his farming tools for thick textbooks and review questionnaires.
In November 2025, the harvest finally came.
When the results of the Agriculturist Licensure Examination were released, Diosdado Evangelista's name was proudly displayed among the passers. The simple farmer from the provinces had officially become a registered professional.
Tatay Ebang’s triumph is a beautiful reminder to the world that life does not end at retirement, and dreams do not come with an expiration date.
