The student publication of BISU Balilihan Campus, The Campus Access, held its Annual HAYAG: Campus-Based Press Conference with the theme, โVoices of Truth and Change: Shaping the Youth Toward Responsible Journalismโ, gathering campus journalists and student leaders for its 1st phase of the activity - the Student Leadersโ Journalism Symposium held on November 26, 2025 at Bohol First Congressional District Library in Magsija, Balilihan, Bohol.
The program opened with a registration of participants, followed by an invocation led by Ms. Jaqueline Nicole Baquero and the singing of hymns by Ms. Reydeyl Dianne Ong. The participants were welcomed by Ms. Kim M. Travero, adviser of The Campus Access, who also guided the student leaders of the activityโs objectives and purpose.
Mr. Ferdinand Roy Lopez, Editor-in-Chief, introduced Atty. Edgar M. Chatto, who served as keynote speaker, emphasizing leadership and the role of the youth in upholding press freedom. โLeadership is a gift from God for mind to develop and share to the others because, truly, every child born has already the potential,โ Chatto said.
This was followed by the next plenary speaker with Mr. John Reno Villapana, Associate Editor-in-Chief, introducing Ms. Leah Marchil Sumampong, who featured precise insights and shared practical writing techniques and strategies for producing accurate and engaging news reports.
"AI is a very good tool but sometimes diba very pretty na atong mga words, but pretty words wonโt matter if we cannot elicit the response we need from the people who read and writing. From a government perspective, we want to make sure our constituents understand our programs, why they are implementing them, and how it can improve our life and understanding promotes cooperation,โ she stated.
In the afternoon, an energizer dance led by Ms. Shaina Kastein Balaba set the mood, followed by the oath-taking of the editorial board from each department with Dr. Jocelyn Lumactud, SDS Director, acting as the administering officer. This was later succeeded by the introduction of the third plenary speaker, Ms. Ardy Araneta-Batoy, who wSwas introduced by Ms. Jaqueline Nicole Baquero, Financial Manager.
Ms. Batoy had an interactive and engaging sessionn among the participants as she creatively presented the different ethics and essentials of responsible broadcasting. The event was gracefully ended with words of gratitude from the Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Ferdinand Roy Lopez.
The symposium aimed to strengthen the skills of student journalists and leaders empowering them to become responsible voices of truth and change in their communities.
