BAYOMBONG, NUEVA VIZCAYA โ Key members of the TKH Production team attended the first-ever Nueva Vizcaya Film Festival filmmaking workshop on September 12-13. The selected crew, which included the director, cinematographer, and scriptwriter, was accompanied by their adviser, Maโam Reyann V. Palma. The event was held at the Ammungan Hall within the Capitol Compound, bringing together aspiring filmmakers from across the province to learn from seasoned professionals.
The first day featured a masterclass led by acclaimed director Mes de Guzman, one of the most respected voices in Philippine independent cinema. Known for his socially relevant films focusing on rural life and marginalized communities, de Guzman is a multi-awarded filmmaker recognized both locally and internationally. His works, such as Ang Daan Patungong Kalimugtong and Diablo, have won at Cinemalaya and been screened in festivals abroad, cementing his reputation as a leading figure in alternative Filipino cinema. He was joined by his wife, Rhea, who co-presented on the essential elements filmmakers should prioritize.
To spark creativity among participants, the de Guzmans facilitated an interactive activity. Student teams were shown a series of images and tasked to select one and develop a story concept from it. The session also featured a screening of de Guzmanโs first film, Batang Trapo, along with clips from his other acclaimed works. Before closing, Mrs. de Guzman left the audience with an inspiring reminder: โKung ano sanang narating namin sa ginagawa namin, sana kayo naman ang sumunod.โ
The second day of the workshop was led by Aries Ferrer, a proud Nueva Vizcaya native and Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of the Philippines Diliman with a degree in Film. His lecture, โStudent Filmmaking as an Alternative Cinema,โ focused on the importance of short, amateur, and personal films in expanding the horizons of Philippine cinema. Ferrer emphasized how grassroots storytelling can provide fresh voices and new perspectives in the industry. Encouraging participants to be resourceful, he told them, โTake what you see as an inspiration.โ
The two-day event gave the TKH Production team a deeper understanding of filmmaking, both in traditional and alternative approaches. They gained valuable knowledge in concept development, cinematic storytelling, and the significance of personal vision in film. The experience is expected to strengthen their future projects while inspiring them to pursue their passion with renewed determination.
