USC Press announces with sadness the passing today of one of its esteemed authors, Valeriano "Bobit" Avila, co-author of one of our bestselling books, "The War in Cebu" (2015). Bobit was not only a WWII chronicler and enthusiast he was also a nephew of famed guerrilla writer and officer, Col. Manuel Segura. (Bobit was named after Col. Segura's father, Capt. Valeriano Segura, who fought bravely and perished in Bataan at the start of WWII, his body never found.) A longtime columnist of "The Freeman" and the "Philippine Star", Bobit also hosted the longest running tv talk show on air "Straight from the Sky."

We ask everyone to say a prayer for the repose of Bobit's soul. May he rest in Peace. Amen.
