“I end with the proud declaration of the truth that the Philippines is irrevocably a land of freedom. The love for freedom is the outstanding trait of the Filipino.” - Diosdado Macapagal
Today, nationwide, we celebrate the 128th Independence day of the Philippines. June 12, 2026 is a day of commemoration for the historical roots of the country and a sounding pulse for the hope of what is to come in the future, even as this nation is led by the very forces that made independence necessary in the first place.
The Philippines was once a flourishing country, blessed by natural bounties of its own, proud Filipinos coexisted despite numerous diversities, and a bright future ahead of it. However, when we look at it now, the country has become so driven by political colors inside its government that it has started to divide the nation and its citizens.
This is not the freedom our ancestors envisioned, the present has become a mockery to our heroes who have violently and selflessly fought for when this nation was still in a state of oppression in the hands of the colonizers.
Within this time of commemoration for the emancipation, may this serve as a wake-up call to the politically divided leaders of this country: the nation is in need of your attention and are growing increasingly tired of your endless conflicts.
The defining trait of the Filipino people is their love for freedom. May they use freedom in accordance to what is right, and not become puppets to the destructive forces that tears us apart, for true independence requires national unity.
The heart who fights for independence is heroic, but the negligence to do one’s duty is a tyrant that deserves to be tamed.
