FUNCTIONAL ROLE OF THE MUNICIPALITY IN THE PROVINCE
Barbaza is an agricultural community and coastal community with 11 coastal barangays that make it self- sufficient for rice being one of the top ten rice producing municipality in the province with an annual production of 6,300,000.00 kilograms and 60% of it is for export,thus contributing to the provonce’s rice sur
plus.Like wise , it is self –sufficient in fish and marine products.It is also a big potential for tourism and has rich fishing grounds due to its vast coral reefs. Barbaza is strategically located halfway between San Jose and Pandan which makes it an ideal place for travelers to drop by, eat and relax, likewise tourist going to Boracay Island using the Iloilo – Antique road may also be encouraged to patronize the refreshment parlors once the commercial activities booms along the national highway.Situated along the Philippine National Highway linking the four provinces of Panay Island and being at the heart of the province. Spill over economy due to this infrastructural linkage particularly the Republic Nautical Highway and geographical proximity will inevitably benefit the municipality. Cultural exchange Barbaza and these key places of the whole country could booster and enrich the social character of the entire municipality. The municipality of Barbaza is planning to transform the Poblacion Public Market into an integrated transport terminal with commercial center and Palma Public Market to a new and bigger facilities in order to accommodate additional stalls owners and new merchants. An ice-plant and cold storage will be improved constructed within a three year period in order to facilitate storage of surplus fish production, preserved fruits and vegetables, and will ultimately reduced the production cost of major basic commodities in the municipality. Geographical Location
The municipality is located at 11 11’. 48” 855 N latitude 122 02’14” 191 E longitudes. It is bounded in the north by the municipality of Tibiao, on the east by the municipality of Tapaz, Capiz, on the south by the municipality of Laua-an and the China Sea on the west. It is 60 kilometers away from San Jose de Buenavista, the provincial capital and 160 kilometers away from Iloilo City. Political Subdivision
Barbaza is one of the eighteen (18) municipalities in the Province of Antique. It is composed of Thirty Nine (39) barangays, which are divided into two (2) categories, the lowland and the upland areas.

1.4 Climate (Figure 4)
1.4.1 Seasons
Barbaza like other municipalities in the province of Antique has two (2) seasons, namely, wet and dry. Dry season occurs from the month of January to April and wet during the rest of the year.
1.4.2 Typhoons
The province of Antique is not within the country’s typhoon belt area. However, typhoons occur all over, the provincial area when the westerly winds from Sibuyan Sea begin to unleash their strength.
1.4.3 Temperature
When typhoons occur, usually dense rain showers and turbulent winds affect the municipality. The temperature in Barbaza is the same with other coastal municipalities of Antique.
1.5 Soil Type
There are five (5) soil types found in the Municipality of Barbaza namely: Alimodian Sandy loam, Umingan Sandy loam, San Miguel Loam, Beach sand and mountain soil undifferentiated. Mineral Resources
The mountainous area of the municipality are rich in Manganese,Copper,Gold and Marble which can be found in the upland barangays of Mayabay,Lombuyan,Marigne,Mablad, Idao,Igpalge and Esparar. Other mineral deposits such as limestone can be found in Esparar Sand and Gravel is being extracted in identified rivers and is being used for infrastructure projects.
1.6 Hydrology (Figure)
1.7.1 Rivers
The town has two main rivers namely: Dalanas and Binangbang River.These rivers are sources of irrigation (around 900 hectares in service area for Dalanas River for BARBAZA ISA).The Binangbang River is the source of Irrigation facilities for BBLGM ISA.
1.7.2 Natural Spring
Natural springs and ground water, which are common sources for potable water, abound in different barangays in the municipality.The Barbaza Water District (Gravity type serving 10 barangays) is taking its source from natural spring in Sito Atabay, Brgy. Baghari and in Sitio Bay-ang ,Brgy. Capoyu-an. There are other natural springs in the municipality which is the source of potable water and irrigation system particularly in the barangays of Esparar, Magtulis, Igpalge, Binanu-an, Yapo and other upland barangays.
1.8 Elevation
The municipality has the highest elevation of 2,325m found in Mt. Nangtud, Barangay Idao.
1.9 Slope
Slope 0-1 18% is equal to 3.054 hectares considered to be Alienable and disposable area based on the topographic map of National Mapping and Research Institute Agency (NAMRIA). The slope 18% and above accounts for 12,125 hectares. These areas include the proclaimed timberland (9207.96 has.).
2.0 Forestry
Forest areas comprise almost 60 % of the total land area covering 9,207.964 hectares.Forest areas are classified as non commercial forest and watershed area.Dalanas River Basin is the largest water shed area in the municipality which comprises several barangays situated along this river and its tributaries.The MALALUBI Agro-Forestry Program comprises the barangays of Mablad,Langca-on,Lombuyan and Biga-a comprising an area of 50 hectares including the Abaca Plantation.Others forestry programs being implemented by the LGU and the DENR are in the following barangays namely: Igpalge,Magtulis,Esparar and Lombuyan.The Community Based Forest Management is in Brgy. Mayabay comprising an area of 50 hectares.
2.1 Fishery and Aquatic Resources
Fishery is another livelihood where the Barbazenous depend on their source of living. Data gathered from the office of the Municipal Agriculturist showed that the fish production for the year 2000 is 96 tons. Barbaza is composed of 11 coastal barangays which are rich in marine resources. A significant number of households engage in fishing and gathering of other coastal resources as their main source of income. Fisheries production in the municipality is generated by two sources. Data from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPA) reveals that as of 2004, the estimated bangus production is 36 metric tons and 60 metric tons of tilapia and catfish, the highest among municipalities in the province. Further, it was reported that there were 7 fishpond operators with an area of 6.7 hectares in the municipality. There was no reported fish production on marine fisheries. However, data shows that a total of 269 fishermen are operating in the coastal waters of the municipality. Out from this number, 138 are full time fishermen and 131 are part time. There are 269 fishermen in the locality that make fishing industry as secondary source of income with a total of 64 motorized bancas and 205 non-motorized. The months of October to April are considered peak months while month of July to August as lean months
2.2 Mineral Resources
The mountainous area of the municipality are rich in Manganese,Copper,Gold and Marble which can be found in the upland barangays of Mayabay,Lombuyan,Marigne Idao,Igpalge and Esparar. 2.3 Tourism Potential
Barbaza is well known for its historical site like the Jinalinan Plaza where the Filipino Forces led by General Alejandro Fullon signed a peace agreement with the American Forces for the Island of Panay and tourist attractions such as the Mt. Nangtud (considered the highest peak in the island of Panay with an elevation of 2,325 meters above sea level.) can be tap for adsventure tourism being declared by The Green Forum as the last frontier in the Island of Panay, Batabat Coral Reef and the beautiful 2 waterfalls situated in the upland barangays of Mablad and Cadiao. The six coral reefs identified and declared fish sanctuary areas in the municipality are good for sailing, snorkeling, scuba diving and other recreation activities with their beautiful and pristine corals and crystal blue waters. Camp Eupre in Barangay Cadiao is also an upland area in which it has rich potentials for eco-tourism. Given adequate funds, Barbaza would be able to utilize its vast array of natural resources for the boost and development of tourism industry. Population 20,709 as of CY 2007(NSO)
