Student Leaders of the College of Computing and Information Sciences (CCIS) attended the Leadership Training and Workshop, a program dedicated to give youth leaders the knowledge and skills they need to improve and lead effectively. The event took place at the Center for Flexible Learning (CFL) Conference Room on September 17, 2025.
Dedicated to advancing the current capabilities that youth leaders possess to fulfill the necessities of leadership and teamwork, the Leadership Training and Workshop was held to provide valuable insight to help student leaders continue to grow. The organizations that participated are the CCIS Student Council, Computer Science Society, Information Technology Society, Esports Club, CCIS Honor Society, Likha Silakbo Club, Junior Block Education Consortium of the Philippines, and The Port Studentsโ Publication.
The program was launched with opening remarks by the Master of Ceremonies, Ms. Miriva India V. Alviar, followed by a short prayer led by the President of the Student Council, Ms. Kyle Marjuneth P. Alegre. The Welcome Remarks and Rationale were delivered by Sandrex R. Dela Cruz, followed by the Key Message from Mrs. Andrea Estrella C. Garcia, who spoke on behalf of the Dean, Dr. Saturnina F. Nisperos, with encouragement to youth leaders to demonstrate their abilities through both hard work and dedication to service.
The Leadership Training Workshop then formally began with the first topic, โCreating Impactful Projects Aligned with the Sustainable Development Goalsโ, meant to inspire youth leaders to value SDGs, and pursue long-term planning for the benefit of the local community, delivered by Dr. Arlene L. Gonzales, Director of Sustainability and Futures Thinking.
This was then followed by the second topic that oriented students with the rules and regulations of Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU), the โUniversityโs Code of Conduct and Dress Code Policyโ, addressed by Prof. Rodel B. Reyes of the Chief of Student Discipline. Following this, to guide youth leaders on gender sensitivity and inclusivity, โGender Sensitive Student Activities Programโ, was addressed by the Director of Gender and Development, Ms. Nataliza L. Llapitan.
The Chief of Student Organizations, Publications and Activities, Mr. Mark Kelvin C. Villanueva then discussed the fourth topic, โCrafting Reports and Resolutionsโ, meant to train student officers on the management of their respective organizations.
The Executive President of the NAKEM Organization, Mr. Earp Jedaiah D. Asuncion then followed through with the fifth topic about the importance of ethical and accountable leadership through โLeadership 101: Ethics and Accountability in Leadershipโ. And lastly, Mr. Renzie A. Aguada, a Senior Graphic Artist of the University, taught students how to design effective visual materials in โBuilding Effective Infographics and MMSU Brand Standards.โ
In an interview, Mr. Cruz, Coordinator of Student Affairs and Services, remarked that the Leadership Training Workshop โwill help student leaders greatly because it will guide them, especially those that have yet to fully grasp the necessary qualities to be leaders.โ He further added, โWith the different insightful topics our speakers delivered today, I am confident that they will be able to deliver their duty.โ
โThe CCIS students have a strong support system, including the faculty and staff who are willing to help, and especially the Dean who has been supportive of our youth leaders and their endeavours.โ he added.
When asked what he would expect of the youth leaders that attended, he stated โEven before the program, I already saw potential in their respective offices.โ
He further stated, โI believe that they will be able to confidently assume their office and fulfill their responsibilities, and leave a lasting legacy for future officers and student leaders.โ
In a different interview, the Student Council President, Ms. Alegre, expressed gratitude and appreciation for the programโs purpose. โAll the topics from the seminar have the same level of importance. Personally, I have learned to see the bigger picture of what it means to lead.โ
Adding on with what she has learned, she stated that โI learned the proper ways of communicating, handling of situations that may come our way, observing decorum, and managing official documents. Though I have always been a leader that listens, the seminar taught me to listen more deeply and to remain fair. To lead is to listen.โ
She then asserted, โBeing a leader never is and never will be about us, it will always be about serving the student bodyโ.
The student officers in attendance are expected to apply the lessons they have learned as they fulfill their duties as youth leaders and serve as inspiration
