Every beginning arrives with a different story.

Before the classrooms became familiar, before new names turned into friends, and before Development Communication became a chapter they could finally call their own, there was anticipation of what was ahead, of who they would become, and of the stories waiting for them to tell.

For the first episode of DevCom Dialogues, we catch up with the newest faces of BatStateU Development Communication as they look back on the days leading to one of the biggest beginnings of their lives.

𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶 𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮 𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘄𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗽𝗼𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗮𝗽𝗼𝘀 𝘀𝗮 𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗹𝗮.

‎Hindi naman talaga kailanman para lamang sa kasaysayan ang kabayanihan. Marahil, parang anino natin, lagi itong tahimik na sumasabay.
‎
‎Nananahan sa mga payak na lugar kung saan patuloy na pinipili ng mga tao ang tumulong sa isa’t isa, sa desisyong magmalasakit, tapang na magsalita kapag mas madaling manahimik, sa mga kamay na patuloy na nagtatayo, nagtuturo, nagpapagaling, at lumilikha, kahit walang kasiguraduhang may makaaalala sa kanilang mga pangalan.
‎
‎Sapagkat ang isang bansa ay hindi lamang nabubuo sa mga sandaling naitatala sa mga pahina ng kasaysayan. ‎Nabubuo rin ito sa mga silid-aralan, kung saan tinuturuan ang mga isip na magtanong at mangarap. Sa mga pamayanan, kung saan natututunan nating walang saysay ang pag-unlad kung hindi ito nakararating sa lahat. Sa mga usapin kung saan pinipili pa rin ang katotohanan kahit hindi ito ang pinakamadaling piliin. At kahit hanggang sa maliliit na paraan kung paano natin ipinapaalala sa sarili na ang mundong ating ginagalawan ay nararapat pagmalasakitan sa kabila ng sistemang ubod ng kasakiman.

‎At marahil, ito ang tunay na iniwan sa atin ng mga bayani—hindi lamang isang kasaysayang dapat balikan, kundi isang pamumuhay na hindi mapupundi at dapat nating ipagpatuloy.

𝐈𝐂𝐘𝐌𝐈 | 𝐅𝐘𝐏: 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐆𝐢𝐟𝐭 𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 (𝐒𝐁𝐃𝐂) set the tone for the year with a launch focused on connection, creativity, and community.

Freshmen were welcomed with 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐠𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐬, 𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐬, 𝐚 𝐦𝐞𝐬𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐢𝐜-𝐝𝐫𝐨𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐞—little moments made to spark confidence and camaraderie.

For SBDC, this isn’t just about starting right. It’s about building a home where new voices are heard, ideas are tested, and stories start to take shape. 𝐎𝐧 𝐀𝐮𝐠𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝟐𝟏, 𝟏𝟗𝟖𝟑, 𝐚 𝐠𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐢𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐚 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞. 𝐈𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐝 𝐧𝐨𝐭.

The assassination of Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. became one of the defining moments in Philippine history. What began as the death of one man became a wound felt across a nation and eventually, a catalyst for a nation who had grown tired of being unheard.

His death did not immediately change the country. But it resonated.

It resonated in the streets, in classrooms, in homes, in conversations whispered and spoken aloud. It resonated in the growing courage of Filipinos who began to recognize that silence was no longer enough. Three years later, millions would gather along EDSA, carrying with them not only their grievances, but the belief that a people could still reclaim their voice.

Forty-three years later, the Philippines finds itself facing a different kind of struggle. The faces have changed. The issues have evolved. Yet questions of accountability, truth, justice, and the kind of country Filipinos deserve remain.

And perhaps this is where history asks something of our generation.

Not to recreate 1983, nor romanticize the past. But simply to recognize the moments when our own voices begin to fade into indifference, complacency, and apathy, to ask whether we will simply watch, or whether we speak, participate, organize, and demand better.

Ninoy's story reminds us that history is not only made by those whose voices are heard. It is also shaped by what people choose to do after a voice is attempted to be silenced.

This Ninoy Aquino Day, may we remember not only the man who fought back, but the people who found their voice afterward.

May that resonance continue.
