𝐇𝐨𝐰 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐈 𝐆𝐨 𝐅𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐨𝐧 𝐔𝐩𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤?
If you're just starting, Upwork can really be hard to navigate. You don’t have feedback, earnings, or work history — but I started with that too!
So, the strategy I used was this:
Make sure you complete your profile so that you can achieve 100% completion.
Work on your profile 𝐭𝐢𝐭𝐥𝐞 and 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. Make sure all the details and titles you add accurately reflect what you do, your services, your skills, and the tools you know. All of these contribute to your profile and act as 𝐭𝐚𝐠𝐬 𝐨𝐫 𝐤𝐞𝐲𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐝𝐬.
Work on your 𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐨. Upwork has its own built-in tab where you can add your portfolio.
𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. This is a bit risky, especially if you don’t have any income from other clients yet, but that’s what I did.
𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐜𝐤 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬. The sole purpose here is to get feedback and build work history. Don’t aim for high-paying projects with a new profile. The client will always choose someone who already has a built profile, so start small.
𝐃𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐈-𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐬. It’s easy to tell if your cover letter is AI-generated, and most clients are already familiar with it. Don’t start talking about yourself — skip to the intro part and be direct about the job description, explaining how you can help them. In your cover letter, make it seem like you’re already closing the deal.
𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 𝐮𝐩. Even if your proposal hasn’t been seen, follow up. Clients are busy, and some replies come after a few days or weeks.
𝐀𝐬𝐤 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐝𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤. Having feedback on your profile helps build momentum, especially if you're just starting out.
