The Sunderland flying boat at MOTAT is the sole complete example in New Zealand and one of just four remaining worldwide. This 1945 aircraft, originally with the RAF, served with the RNZAF (serial number NZ4115) from 1953, primarily with 5 Squadron in Fiji, and later at Hobsonville. It was retired in 1966 and donated to MOTAT after being replaced by Lockheed Orions. The Sunderland was highly regarded in the South Pacific for its search and rescue operations, including medical evacuations and support for hurricane-affected areas.

Making History: Youngest Eastbourne Final Since 1981

The 2025 Lexus Eastbourne Open is set to feature its youngest women’s singles final in 44 years, as 20-year-old Alex Eala of the Philippines faces off against 19-year-old Australian Maya Joint on June 28.

Eala secured her spot in the final after a gritty three-set victory over French qualifier Varvara Gracheva (7-5, 2-6, 6-3) in a semifinal filled with momentum shifts and powerful baseline exchanges—highlighting her growing confidence on grass.

This will be the youngest WTA final at Eastbourne since 1981, when 18-year-old Tracy Austin defeated 16-year-old Andrea Jaeger.

Both players enter the final at career-high rankings: Eala at World No. 74 and Joint at No. 51. Eala is chasing her first WTA title, while Joint is aiming to add a second trophy to her name, following her win in Rabat earlier this year.

Eala also makes history as the first Filipina to reach a WTA final.

She shot into the global spotlight in March after a breakout run to the Miami Open semifinals, defeating Grand Slam champions Jelena Ostapenko, Madison Keys, and Iga Swiatek along the way.

🗻 Why Do People Still Climb Mt. Everest Despite the Danger?

Mount Everest remains one of the most dangerous and deadly climbs in the world — yet every year, hundreds still risk it all. Why?

Because for many, it's more than just a mountain. It’s a symbol of conquering fears, pushing limits, and fulfilling lifelong dreams.

Some seek recognition, others crave the adventure. For a few, it’s a spiritual journey —a way to find meaning in life or healing after loss.

Yes, there’s risk—extreme cold, avalanches, and oxygen-starved air. But still… they climb. Not because it's easy, but because it's worth it.
