"Caboloan" is the ancient name of the Pangasinan province from the pre-colonial times until the Spanish colonial period. "Aripuen" (The Servant), a new feature film I have been writing since 2010 is now officially a finalist in the upcoming 20th edition of the Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2024. Thank you to the 2nd Southeast Asian Film Lab, the 58th U.P. National Writer's Workshop, and the 2023 Cinemalaya Film Lab for the chance to workshop and develop the screenplay. This project is lovingly dedicated to fellow overseas Filipino workers in Saudi Arabia and South Korea and to my immediate family in Pangasinan. With the Almighty Lord's guidance, may this project find the funders and artistic collaborators to bring the film to its' completion. Mabilay!

Director's Statement for "Agno: Memories of a Forgotten River"

"The pandemic has given us more time to attend to matters that we normally have little or no time at all to pay attention to during our busy daily schedules. One of these activities is organizing our family archives which includes our family’s photographs, old letters and greeting cards, mementos given by loved ones, our home garden, and even our very own house. Our memories embedded in our family archives is priceless.

On a larger and public scale, a community’s memory is also priceless. But there are many communities, especially those in developing countries, with no existing public archives where their collective memories are kept and preserved for posterity.

For this ten-minute creative documentary film, I am again engaging the cinema as a technology of memory. I am using the cinema to create a small part of a larger community archive that shows the collective memory of the people in my hometown. This collective memory pertains to the complex relationship of the people with a major body of water that has shaped their culture and identity.

I want to make a film that creates an evocative autoethnography of the present-day Pangasinan people who have been living for centuries in the Agno River basin. Presently, the Agno River basin is one of the largest centers of agriculture and aquaculture in the northern Philippines, it is also a center for large-scale commercial gold mining operations in the Philippines, it is also the location of one of the biggest as well as highly controversial hydroelectric dams built in Southeast Asia over the recent years, and it is also one of most ecologically unstable and vulnerable places in northern Philippines prone to siltation, toxic mine spill, water quality issues, and massive floodings during the rainy monsoon season."
