DID YOU KNOW? — Before the Land Cruiser, There Was the Toyota Jeep BJ.
Long before the FJ40 became an icon, Toyota was building something that would eventually become one of the most respected 4x4 names in history.
In 1951, Toyota developed the Toyota Jeep BJ for Japan’s National Police Reserve. It was based on a modified Model SB truck chassis and powered by a 3,400cc, 6-cylinder Type B gasoline engine.
The BJ was big, rugged, and powerful for its time.
But there was one problem—the word “Jeep” was already a trademark of Willys-Overland.
So in June 1954, Toyota gave it a new name: LAND CRUISER.
And the rest is history.
From the original BJ to the legendary FJ40, the Land Cruiser has spent more than seven decades proving one thing:
A true 4x4 doesn't need to be complicated. It just needs to keep going.
