The excessive supply of crops, particularly tomatoes, often results in large volumes being discarded or sold at very low prices due to limited market demand and the preference of buyers for freshly harvested produce. This recurring oversupply problem leads to significant losses for farmers and highlights the need for innovative ways to add value to agricultural products.

To address this concern, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology โ€“ Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (DOST-PCHRD), successfully conducted the inception meeting for the newly approved project titled "Preclinical Evaluation of Glucose- and Cholesterol-Lowering Activities and Immunomodulatory Effects of Natural Pectin from Tomato" on June 9, 2026, at the NVSU RET Conference Hall in Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, and via Zoom.

The project is headed by Project Leader Mark C. Balonquita, with Project Staff Reymund C. Derilo and Jennylin C. Balagtas.

With a total funding allocation of โ‚ฑ999,997.70 and a one-year implementation period, the project aims to utilize pectin extracted from surplus tomatoes and evaluate its potential effects on hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and immune response in experimental animals. Through this initiative, the study seeks to transform excess tomatoes into a value-added bioactive resource with potential pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications.

The inception meeting, facilitated by DOST-PCHRD, served as a platform to align stakeholders on the project's objectives, implementation plans, and financial and administrative requirements. The activity was attended by the project team and heads of the University's administrative offices.

Stories shape industries, and for the citrus sector, these narratives will be captured in โ€œ๐—–๐—œ๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—จ๐—ฆ๐˜๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜†๐—ฎ,โ€ a wordplay combining citrus and istorya, an Ilocano term for story. The project, titled โ€œCITRUStorya: Enhancing Dissemination and Adoption of Citrus Technologies through Structured and Effective Communication and Promotion Program,โ€ is funded by DOST PCAARRD under its Applied Communication Division (ACD). It aims to bridge the gap between research and practice by strategically communicating citrus technologies to stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of increasing awareness and promoting adoption and sustained use.

To formally launch the project, DOST-PCAARRD ACD conducted an inception meeting to define strategies and operational plans. The project is led by Sheena Lyn V. Ramos, with Dr. Luther F. Castillo and Ramon P. Bangao Jr. as project staff. Supporting the implementation are Analiza F. Esguerra, Alexiz Mae P. Castillo, and Ericson R. Delacruz, along with the R&D monitoring team.

The meeting gathered key officials and stakeholders from DOST-PCAARRD and Nueva Vizcaya State University. Dr. Melvin B. Carlos, Deputy Executive Director for Administration, expressed strong support for the initiative, followed by Dr. Wilfredo A. Dumale Jr., highlighting NVSUโ€™s commitment to research dissemination and community engagement.

A detailed project overview was presented by Dr. Marita A. Carlos, ACD Director, and Ms. Ramos shared the project details. Joel Eneristo A. Joven discussed the Grants-in-Aid (GIA) guidelines, while Dianne Camille L. Lapidario outlined the monitoring and evaluation plan. The meeting was facilitated by Rose Anne Mananghaya-Aya of ACD, ensuring productive discussions.

Also present were members of NVSU administration and research leadership, including Dr. Jonar I. Yago, VP for RET who also expressed his strong support, along with representatives from DOST-PCAARRD and various university offices.

With a total budget of Php 4.99 million, CITRUStorya is a two-year initiative designed to strengthen the communication, adoption, and sustained use of citrus technologies.

NVSU extends its heartfelt gratitude to DOST-PCAARRD ACD for this partnership. Maraming salamat po!

Demonstrating excellence in innovation, intellectual property protection, and the real-world application of technology, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU), through its Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM), secured a back-to-back victory after being conferred the Platinum Award during the Innovation and Technology Support Office (ITSO) Presidents' Summit and General Assembly held in Iloilo City on March 25.

Carrying the theme โ€œ15 Years of Strengthening the Philippine TISCS: Innovation and Creativity Toward Sustainable Technology Transfer,โ€ the summit recognized ITSOs across the country for their outstanding contributions to innovation, intellectual property (IP) generation, and technology transfer.

The Platinum Award, the highest distinction granted by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL), is bestowed upon top-performing ITSOs that demonstrate excellence in patent generation, IP commercialization, capacity-building initiatives, and active participation in the national innovation ecosystem.

Just like in 2025, Nueva Vizcaya State University (NVSU) once again stands as the lone State University and College (SUC) in the Cagayan Valley region to receive this prestigious recognition.

NVSUโ€™s IPTBM earned the prestigious recognition through its strong and consistent performance in advancing IP education, protection, and utilization.

The office conducted extensive capacity-building initiatives, including 13 Foundation Course or Basic IP trainings, four patent search trainings, and two patent drafting trainings, equipping researchers and stakeholders with essential knowledge and skills in intellectual property. Further strengthening institutional support, the office also drafted one IP policy integrating ACAP provisions.

In terms of IP generation and protection, the university recorded significant outputs, filing 15 copyrights, three utility models, and three industrial designs.

It also produced 33 prior art search reports and successfully filed 10 patents, reflecting its growing research and innovation portfolio.
Beyond filings, NVSU demonstrated its commitment to translating innovation into tangible impact.

In 2025, the university completed one Freedom to Operate (FTO) report and successfully commercialized one technologyโ€”both centered on its cacao machine innovation.

In recognition of its remarkable accomplishments, NVSU was also awarded a Special Citation for fulfilling the requirements by filing at least 10 patent applications.

Additionally, the following individuals were given a Certificate of Commendation for their outstanding contributions to the universityโ€™s IP and technology initiatives: Dr. Sonny P. Aquino, Mr. Eduard P. Bragado, Mr. Emerson SKye E. Vidad, Ms. Flormelyn D. Tumenez, Dr. Jenaida B. Aquino, Engr. Laymar P. Umhao, Engr. Michael D. Aliaga, Ms. Adhelyn Jane Q. Obtial and Mr. Ramon P. Bangao Jr.

The back-to-back Platinum recognition, along with the special citation and certificates of commendation, affirms NVSUโ€™s continued leadership in innovation and technology transfer, reinforcing its vital role in strengthening the countryโ€™s intellectual property ecosystem and advancing sustainable development through research-driven solutions.
