Not Broken. Not Abused. Not Sick.
Why Some People Choose B**M?
1. It creates controlled intensity.
B**M is built on negotiation, consent, and agreed power exchange. Research shows consensual B**M differs significantly from abuse because of clear boundaries and mutual agreement (Connolly, 2006; Joyal & Carpentier, 2017). Structure can actually create psychological safety.
2. It activates the stress–reward system.
Consensual intense stimulation can trigger adrenaline, endorphins, and dopamine. Studies show participants in B**M scenes experience altered states linked to bonding and reward activation (Sagarin et al., 2009). Controlled stress is processed differently by the brain than real threat.
3. It provides psychological release.
Some individuals use power dynamics to temporarily step out of daily roles. Research suggests B**M practitioners do not show higher levels of psychopathology compared to the general population (Wismeijer & van Assen, 2013). In some studies, they score higher on openness and well-being.
4. It strengthens trust through structure.
Healthy B**M communities emphasize explicit consent, pre-negotiation, boundaries, and aftercare. Trust is not assumed. It is built intentionally.
5. It is about autonomy, not damage.
Choosing B**M does not automatically mean trauma history, mental illness, or violence preference. Human desire is diverse. The defining factor is informed, enthusiastic consent.
Not all intensity is harm.
Not all softness is safe.
The difference is consent, communication, and psychological awareness.
