A lot of career advice makes risk sound glamorous:
“Follow your passion.” “Take the leap.” “Bet on yourself.”
But here’s the truth, taking risks is a privilege. Not everyone can afford to quit their job, start a business, or go months without a paycheck.
For many people, work is about stability and survival, not just passion.
That doesn’t make them less driven or less talented. It just makes them real.
The problem with one-size-fits-all advice is that it ignores people’s situations. Risk is easier if you have savings or support. It’s much harder if one wrong move could mean losing everything.
Maybe instead of telling people to “leap,” we should focus on building systems that make risk safer for everyone.
And remember, sometimes the bravest move is simply staying where you are.
