If the proposed 200-peso wage increase is approved, prices of goods and services will likely rise immediately, reducing the buying power of everyone earning 850 pesos or more.
While a higher wage sounds good, it could hurt businesses, especially small ones, if costs like electricity and business permit requirements aren’t lowered first. Many businesses are already struggling—thousands closed in 2024, including around 1,000 workers from Pepsi-Cola’s Muntinlupa plant and 300 from CNN Philippines. AI is also replacing jobs in call centers and virtual assistant roles, limiting job options.
A better solution is for the government to support businesses that pay decent wages (650–850 pesos daily) through subsidies, making it easier for them to operate. Instead of short-term aid like Ayuda, simplifying business regulations and reducing costs would help create stable jobs for Filipinos. Raising wages without supporting businesses will likely lead to more closures and job losses.
