Not every champion begins with a straight path. Some victories are born from long pauses, unexpected returns, and the courage to begin again. But, for Burauen Community College (BCC) Red Lawin's lone female Arnis player, Christine Irlandez, the real triumph began long before she stepped onto the competition floor of the Local Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (LCUAA) 2026 last April.

It began the day she chose to return.

After years away from competitive Arnis, she walked back into the sport she loved. Rather than carrying confidence, the feeling of uncertainty was glaring upon her return. She had no guarantee that she could still compete at the highest level, particularly in college.

Moreover, she had little time to prepare after unexpectedly earning a spot on the team. Yet, when the tournament concluded, she stood proudly with one gold medal in the Women's Single Weapon even, and two silver medals in the Double Identical Weapons Exhibition and Sword and Dagger

Fight events respectively.

Those medals told only part of the story.

Behind every strike, every block, and every victory stood years of absence, countless sacrifices, and an unwavering belief that some dreams deserve another chance.

Unlike basketball or volleyball, Arnis rarely attracts the spotlight. Yet for Christine, it was never about popularity. For her, Arnis became part of her identity.

She first discovered the Filipino martial art during her elementary years, before eventually stopping in high school. She believed that chapter of her life had already closed. College, however, offered an unexpected opportunity.

"Nagtikang ako pag-Arnis hadton elementary pa ako, pero napaundang ako han high school,Pag-abot ko han college, waray ko ginlalaoman nga makakabalik pa ako." She recalled.

Returning to the sport awakened something she thought she had lost.

"When I had the chance to return to Arnis, I realized that this sport was never just a game for meโ€”it became part of who I am."

Although Arnis is not among the country's most celebrated collegiate sports, Christine never viewed that as a disadvantage.

"Bisan diri ini popular nga sport, ginpili ko ini because I wanted to challenge myself, grow as an athlete, and prove to myself that I could start again."

That desire to begin again would soon become the defining theme of her LCUAA journey.

Success rarely arrives without hardship. For Christine, the biggest battle came before the tournament even started. After years without competition, she found herself relearning everything she once knew. She admitted feeling as though she had returned to square one. The basic strikes, defensive movements, footwork, and advanced techniques all demanded constant repetition.

"Honestly, I felt like I was back to zero,""Kinahanglan ko utro pag-ensayohan an mga basic ngan advanced techniques." She admitted.

Adding to the challenge was the unexpected nature of her participation in the upcoming LCUAA.

โ€œDiri expected an akon pag-intra ha LCUAA, so I had very little time to prepare."

Ever training session became a race against time. Every repetition became another attempt to rebuild confidence. There were moments when frustration nearly overwhelmed her. But, the belief to trust the process of her training was her motto.

"There were moments when I doubted myself. But, I chose to continue and trust the process." She added.

Those simple words would later become the foundation of everything she accomplished in Ormoc.

As spectators watched the fierce routines inside the playing area, Christine was fighting another battle entirelyโ€”the battle inside her own mind. Instead of allowing pressure to dictate her performance, she focused on remaining composed.

"Samtang nagkukompetensya ako, ginhihimo ko an akon pinakamaupay ngan ginpapahinumdom ko an akon kalugaringon nga magpabilin nga kalmado."

She continually reminded herself of one important truth, the countless hours of exhausting practice, the sacrifices before the tournament began. It will all pay off in the end, when the gold medals is hanging around her neck, and hailed as the overall champion.

"I kept telling myself to trust my training and believe in my abilities."

Every movement carried the weight of months of preparation.

"Ginhinumdom ko an tanan nga sacrifices ngan effort nga akon ginhimo, salit karuyag ko la ihatag an akon best ha kada event."

For Christine, victory was never guaranteed. Giving her best was.

When the announcement came that she had captured the Women's Single Weapon gold medal, the emotions were overwhelming.

"Pagkahibaro ko nga ako an nagdaog han gold medal, I felt extremely happy, proud, and grateful." She spoke.

Yet, the medal represented something much deeper than finishing first. Her comeback had become proof that perseverance eventually finds its reward.

"Diri la tungod han medalya, kundi tungod kay nakita ko nga an tanan nga kakapoy, sacrifices, ngan pagpaningkamot during han training may resulta. It reminded me that even if I returned to Arnis after a long break, I was still capable of achieving something meaningful."

The gold medal validated not only her performance, but also every difficult decision she had made along the way. It was a proof that a comeback could become greater than the setback itself.

While the gold medal became her crowning achievement, earning two silver medals required an entirely different level of perseverance.

Christine openly admitted that the Double Identical Weapons Exhibition was never her strongest discipline.

"An double baston diri gud ini an akon forte," she confessed.

Because of that weakness, she devoted herself to mastering skills that did not come naturally.

Training was often exhausting. There were days when fatigue threatened to outweigh determination. Yet, she refused to quit.

"Bisan damo, ngan kakapoy ngan kakuri ha training, ginpadayon ko gihapon kay maaram ako nga ini nga mga hagit makakabulig ha akon nga magin mas maupay nga atleta."

Those silver medals became symbols of resilience every bit as meaningful as gold.

Physical strength alone was never enough. Because she entered the tournament unexpectedly, Christine relied equally on mental and emotional preparation.

"Mentally, I stayed positive, prayed, and reminded myself not to give up."

Even when exhaustion took over, she continued pushing herself.

"Physically, I pushed myself during training even when I was already exhausted because I knew every practice was preparing me for the competition." She said.

Her success ultimately rested on one simple principle.

"Consistency was the key."

She emphasized that regular training, repeating the basics, and constant conditioning became the habits that sustained her throughout the tournament.

โ€œBisan diri perpekto an kada ensayo, an importante amo an pagpadayon ngan pag-improve kada adlaw." She added.

Every athlete needs someone who believes in them when self-belief begins to fade. For Christine, that unwavering support came from Coach Junel Asis and Trainer Nathaniel Novio.

"Dako gud an ira naibulig ha akon," she said.

Training was never easy. Christine had frequent complaints about the exhausting training sessions with her coach and trainer. But, they never lost faith in her ability to perform well in Arnis.

"Even though I always complained because training was very exhausting, they never stopped believing in me."

Their guidance extended beyond technical corrections. Mr. Asis and Mr. Novio reminded Christine of her potential whenever self-doubt surfaced within herself during training sessions.

Most importantly, they offered something every athlete needs. They instill the belief in her that could perform well , before she fully believed in herself.

"They believed in me even when I had doubts about myself, and their trust motivated me to keep going."

Their confidence became the strength she borrowed whenever her own confidence weakened.

Beyond the podium finishes, Christine considers LCUAA 2026 one of the most valuable learning experiences of her athletic career. She discovered that success cannot be rushed. It requires patience, discipline, and consistency.

"Success takes time, effort, and patience," she reflected.

She also learned that talent alone cannot guarantee success. Success are earned during ordinary days filled with sweat, sacrifice, and silent perseverance.

Every difficult training session became another step toward becoming not only a stronger athlete but also a stronger individual.

"Every challenge I faced during training became a lesson that made me stronger and helped me become a better athlete."

Christine Irlandez's remarkable campaign will forever be remembered in the history of the BCC Red Lawin Arnis Teamโ€”not simply because she won one gold and two silver medals, but because of the story behind every medal that she earned. For Christine, those medals symbolize much more than podium finishes. It represented the hardships when she wanted to stop, she still choose to continue the journey as an Arnis athlete.

"This achievement is more than just medals, It represents all the hard work, sacrifices, painful trainings, and moments when I wanted to give up but still chose to continue.โ€

Her message now reaches beyond herself, it is for her fellow Red Lawin Athletes here in Burauen Community College.

"Para ha BCC ngan Red Lawin athletes, I hope this inspires others to believe in themselves. Because with dedication, faith, and perseverance, anything is possible."

In an era where success is often measured by instant results, Christine Irlandez reminds everyone that greatness is sometimes found in choosing to rekindle the lost passion she once had, in playing the sport of Arnis.

Her story does not merely represent winning. It encapsulates the story of believing in oneโ€™s ability to succeed, and enduring all the challenges that comes with it, in achieving the ultimate prize of being hailed as champion.

In the end, it proved that the strongest warriors are not those who never fallโ€”but those courageous enough to rise again to the mountain top.

Every upload tells a storyโ€”but not the one most people see.

Cristopher Barcala is a 22-year-old fourth-year Bachelor of Science in Criminology (BS Crim) student at Burauen Community College (BCC) who shares entertaining content on social media as "Itss Christopher." While many recognize him for the laughter he brings online, few know the hardships that shaped the person behind the screen.

For Cristopher, success has never been measured by views or followers alone, but by every obstacle he has overcome and every dream he continues to pursue.

Long before he became known online, Cristopher had already experienced the kind of loss that changes a person's life forever.

He was only in Grade 1 when his father died from electrocution while fishing in a stream. Years later, at the age of 16, he lost his mother to heart disease.

"An akon father po nakuryente hiya while nangingisda ha sapa. An akon mother naman ha iya sakit [ha] heart. Han namatay an akon father, Grade 1 pala ako adto. He said.

Losing both parents at such a young age forced him to grow up faster than most. Yet instead of allowing grief to define him, Cristopher chose to honor their memories by persevering through life's hardships.

He comes from a family of six siblings, although one of them has since passed away. Today, most of his siblings have families of their own, but they continue supporting him as he works toward earning his college degree.

"Ako nala talaga it nasasalin na waray asawa, so hira gihap an nagsu-support ha ak." He added.

Their unwavering support reminds him that although his parents are no longer with him, he has never faced his journey alone.

Among all the people who shaped his life, Cristopher says it is his late mother whose sacrifices continue to inspire him the most.

"My mother gave her blood and sweat so my siblings and I could survive." He added.

Her sacrifices continue to guide him, reminding him that every step toward his dreams is also a tribute to the life she worked so hard to give her children.

For Cristopher, changing his life began with changing his mindset.

Unlike many who look up to celebrities or public figures for inspiration, he believes his greatest motivation comes from within.

He said.

Growing up in poverty taught Cristopher that no one else could change his future for him. Rather than accepting his circumstances, he became determined to build a better lifeโ€”not only for himself but also for the family who continued to believe in him.

"I want to rise above my situation and I don't want to stay where I am right now." He added.

That determination led him to postpone college after graduating from Senior High School in 2022. Instead of entering the classroom, Cristopher spent a year working in Manila to save enough money to pursue his education.

"After I graduated ha [senior high school] way back year 2022, nag-work ako ha Manila for one year para magtirok para college." He added.

The experience taught him independence, responsibility, and the value of every hard-earned pesoโ€”lessons he would carry with him throughout college.

Entering college did not mark the end of Cristopher's financial strugglesโ€”it simply brought new challenges.

To support his education, he worked as both a cashier and waiter at a restobar while pursuing his studies.

"Nag-work po ak ha 3BU Restobar as a cashier tas waiter gihap." He said.

Balancing work and academics demanded sacrifices. After long night shifts, he would head straight to his 7 a.m. classes, often with little time to rest.

"Night shifts are stressful, then I still have a 7 AM class in the morning." He added.

There were also days when he walked to school because he could not afford transportation and attended classes on an empty stomach because there was simply no food available.

Every shift he worked, every kilometer he walked, and every sleepless night brought him one step closer to the degree he had fought so hard to earn.

Amid the hardships of balancing work and college, Cristopher found an unexpected outlet through content creation.

What began as a hobby soon became a creative outletโ€”a space where he could express himself, share joy, and connect with people beyond the screen.

"As a content creator, I really enjoy making videos. It warms my heart when people appreciate and enjoy my work." He said.

For Cristopher, every video represents more than content. It is proof that even amid life's struggles, there is always room for creativity, laughter, and hope.

Beyond the views and his growing online following, he treasures the people who have supported him throughout his journey.

"My followers and friends are always there, even when I have nothing... So many people now know me. It warms my heart, and blessings come unexpectedly." He added.

Their encouragement reminds him that the most meaningful part of content creation is not the numbers, but the people whose lives he has touched along the way.

Poverty was not the only challenge Cristopher had to overcome. As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, he also faced discrimination while pursuing his education.

He said.

Rather than allowing prejudice to define him, Cristopher chose to respond with quiet strength and kindness.

"Diri ko nala ito gin-iintindi. Importante waray ak ginbubuhat nga maraot ha iba." He added.

Instead of dwelling on the negativity, he remained focused on what mattered mostโ€”earning his degree and becoming the person he aspired to be.

Looking back, Cristopher says his greatest achievement is not the recognition he has gained online, but the fact that he kept moving forward despite every setback.

"Moving up every year from first year until now is my biggest achievement." He added

"I'm proudest that I overcame all the challenges, no matter how hardโ€”I made it." He added.

Each completed semester became more than an academic milestone; it became proof that resilience can outlast even life's hardest seasons.

The most valuable lessons Cristopher learned were never found inside a classroom. Through loss, poverty, discrimination, and sacrifice, he discovered that dreams are built through perseverance, faith, and unwavering determination.

"Don't give up on your dreams because the day will come when you'll achieve what you've been praying for." He shared.

For students who may be facing struggles of their own, Cristopher leaves a simple yet heartfelt reminder:

"Keep growing. There's no easy path to your dreams, so just persevere even when life is hard." He added.

Above all, he reminds students to never forget the people who continue to make sacrifices for their future.

"When you're tired, remember someone is even more tired than youโ€”your family." He added.

His story reminds us that while education shapes knowledge, it is life's challenges that shape character.

Perhaps many will remember Cristopher Barcala as the young man behind "Itss Christopher." But beyond the screen is someone whose greatest achievement is not the audience he has built, but the strength he has shown through every loss, sacrifice, and setback.

His story reminds us that success is not measured by views or followers, but by the courage to keep moving forward when life gives every reason to stop.

Jean Rose Rael.
