CDO mayoralty candidate Oscar Moreno engages private elementary schools, addresses key issues and concerns
Cagayan de Oro City – In a recent dialogue titled the Pakighinabi Serye, mayoralty candidate Mayor Oscar S. Moreno engaged with school administrators and principals of private elementary schools to tackle pressing educational and community concerns. The event revealed persistent issues and Moreno's strategic plans to address them.
During the discussions, several critical issues were raised by the association of public elementary schools:
1. Enhancement of SPED Program and Family Support. There is a growing need to bolster Special Education (SPED) programs and extend support to families with children who have special needs.
2. Modern Library Facilities. Participants emphasized the necessity for a modern library catering to students, professionals, and senior citizens, providing resources for learning and development.
3. Public Safety Concerns. One school principal expressed growing concerns about the city's safety, highlighting the need for enhanced public security measures.
4. Development of a Comprehensive Sports Program. The establishment of training programs and facilities is vital to boost athletes’ competitiveness while observing that the quality of the city’s athletes had been declining.
5. Support for Private School Teachers. Calls for additional support to private school teachers were made, stressing the importance of promoting their welfare and development.
6. *Promotion of Moral Recovery and Values Formation. Engaging the youth in values formation is seen as a crucial step towards societal improvement.
In response to these highlighted concerns, Mayor Moreno outlined his upcoming initiatives aimed at addressing these pressing issues:
SPED Program Enhancement: Moreno plans to institutionalize support for the SPED program by collaborating with the Department of Education (DepEd), private sector, and experts, ensuring that children with special needs and their families receive the required assistance.
Completion of Educational Infrastructure. Mayor Moreno vowed to complete the construction of a five-storey building at the City Central School which comprised of a 50 classrooms, an office for the Girl Scouts and the City Library. He started building this facility during his administration but has remained unfinished by the current administration. He is also exploring the establishment of district-specific libraries, enhancing accessibility and learning resources for the community.
Public Safety Initiatives. To combat safety concerns, Moreno proposes a comprehensive anti-drug addiction campaign focused on prevention, enforcement, rehabilitation, and reintegration, promoting a drug-free Cagayan de Oro City.
Sports Complex Development. Completing the Lumbia Sports Complex remains a priority, offering athletes a dedicated space for training and competition, supporting the city’s sporting ambitions.
Teachers’ Welfare and Housing. Moreno is also proposing a housing program tailored for educators, as part of efforts to support and improve private school teachers’ living conditions.
Moreno’s vision reflects a commitment to fostering educational improvements and community safety, highlighting collaborative efforts with relevant sectors. His proposals aim to enhance the city's educational landscape and address community concerns effectively, showcasing his dedication to sustainable urban development.
