Sa kolum ng Europe-based Pinoy social anthropologist at heritage activist na si Antonio J. Montalvan II sa Vera Files ngayong Oktubre 14, ibinulgar niya ang umano’y tatlong “untold secrets” ni Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong, na para sa kanya ay mas tama umanong bansagan bilang “Duterte protector” kaysa “crime buster.”

Ang una umanong “untold secret” ng dating special adviser-investigator ng Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) na si Magalong, ayon kay Montalvan, ay ang hindi nito pinapangalanang mga sangkot sa P36-billion rock-netting scam sa Benguet—bagay na ibinulgar ng alkalde kay former senator Sonny Trillanes noong 2022.

“Yap and the son Duterte were the names that Magalong had revealed to Trillanes as behind the rock-netting corruption in Benguet to the tune of P36 billion. Have we heard Magalong say this in public? Never,” mababasa sa opinion piece ni Montalvan, tinukoy sina dating House Appropriations Committee chairman, dating ACT-CIS Rep. Eric Yap; at Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo ‘Pulong’ Duterte, panganay na anak ni dating pangulong Rodrigo Duterte.

Sa kanyang kolum, sinabi ni Montalvan na ang ikalawang “untold secret” ni Magalong ay ang pagiging “alleged junta head” ng alkalde sakaling natuloy ang pinlano umanong kudeta laban kay President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. nitong Setyembre 21, kung saan si Magalong umano “will then appoint Sara Duterte as ‘transitional leader.’”

“Notice that Magalong skirts commenting on the allegations of his being the junta head tasked to appoint Sara Duterte. He will be damned if he admits, yet damned if he denies. Hence it remains his second untold secret because it will spill the beans on who he is protecting,” sulat ni Montalvan.

At ang ikatlo umanong “untold secret” ni Magalong, ayon kay Montalvan: “Where is Bantag now?” tinukoy si dating Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Gerald Bantag, na itinuturong utak sa pagpat@y sa broadcaster na si Percy Lapid noong 2022.

“A Percy Lapid family member I had spoken to believes Magalong knows where Bantag’s hiding place is in the Cordilleras. It is so safely secured that even the way to it is riddled with secret real-time informants who can promptly relay to Bantag the entry of intruders,” mababasa pa sa kolum ni Montalvan sa Vera Files.

Inihayag ni Vice President Sara Duterte sa press conference niya ngayong Martes, Oktubre 14, na hindi niya “pakawala” o kontrolado si Cavite 4th District Rep. Kiko Barzaga dahil makikita umano sa prinsipyo ng batang kongresista na ito ay isang independent na tao.

“Ang pagkakaalam ko ang magulang niya… Sara only, pero si Congressman Kiko Barzaga was for the UniTeam… Hindi ko pakawala si Kiko Barzaga…Nakikita n'yo naman 'yung kanyang independence sa pag-iisip…'yung kanyang lakas ng loob…'yung prinsipyo niya,” aniya.

Inihalimbawa naman ni VP Sara ang pinagkaiba ng mga sinusuportahan ni Barzaga at ng kanyang magulang bilang patunay na hindi siya nakikinig sa kanyang mga magulang.

“So bakit ‘yan makikinig kay Sara Duterte? So no, I do not control Congressman Kiko Barzaga. He is his own person, he has his own principles, and he has his own free will,” dagdag pa ng Bise Presidente.

Ito ang inihayag ni Vice President Sara Duterte sa kanyang press conference ngayong Martes, Oktubre 14, nang tanungin siya kung ano ang kanyang stand sa mga naganap na pangha-harass ng Chinese Coast Guard (CCG) sa Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) at Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) vessels sa Bajo de Masinloc kamakailan.

Sinabi ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. na walang makikitang problema sa flood control projects basta’t maayos ang pagkakagawa, disensyo, at implementasyon nito.

Inihayag ito ng pangulo sa inagurasyon ng Union Water Impounding Dam sa Barangay Union at Cadcadir sa Claveria, Cagayan, isang proyekto na nagsimula sa kanyang termino.

Sa pamamagitan ng mas maayos at efficient irrigation system, inaasahang mapakikinabangan ng mahigit 1,000 magsasaka ang naturang dam project na nagkakahalaga ng ₱750 milyon.

Umani naman ito ng mga reaksyon mula sa netizens at nag-iwan ng komento sa post ni Roque.

“He aint a rockstar but a catstar!!!” komento ng isang netizen.

Binanatan naman ng ibang netizens si Roque sa kanyang pahayag, “You mean the college dropout Nepo?”

Aniya, mismong si Magalong ang nagbunyag kay former senator Antonio ‘Sonny’ Trillanes IV noong 2022 ng tungkol sa mga sangkot sa nasabing P36-billion flood at slope protection initiative, pero hindi kailanman nabanggit ng alkalde ang tungkol dito kahit pa noong itinalaga itong special adviser-investigator ng Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI).

Ikinuwento ni Montalvan ang tungkol sa pamumuno ni ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Eric Yap sa makapangyarihang House Appropriations Committee—na tumututok sa pagpopondo ng gobyerno—noong 2020 sa kabila ng ilang buwan pa lamang si Yap noon sa unang termino bilang kongresista.

“Yap’s being a neophyte was insignificant. What was significant was who he was faithful to. Rodrigo Duterte himself said it – Eric Yap is the BFF of Paolo Duterte his son,” ayon sa kolum ni Montalvan, tinukoy si Davao City 1st District Rep. Paolo ‘Pulong’ Duterte.

“BTW, when Yap was House Appropriations chair, that was also the same period when Paolo Duterte received P51 billion in pork barrel funds. No need to connect the dots,” dagdag pa ni Montalvan.

Sa huli, sinabi ni Montalvan na sina Yap at Pulong ang binanggit ni Magalong kay Trillanes na “behind the rock-netting corruption in Benguet,” pero malaking palaisipan, aniya, kung bakit hindi inilalantad ni Magalong ang impormasyong ito, kahit pa personal itong sumasama noon kay President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. sa pag-iinspeksiyon sa flood control projects sa Benguet.

“Magalong relishes being a poster boy of reform. Those days are over now. By his own undoing, he has unraveled the real Benjamin Magalong who is no reformer,” sabi pa ni Montalvan. “What we need are crime busters. Magalong is not. No unapologetic Duterte protector can be a crime buster.”

Sa pinakabagong Tugon ng Masa survey ng OCTA Research na isinagawa noong Setyembre 25 hanggang 30, lumabas na 60 porsyento ng mga Pinoy ang nakakaramdam ng galit sa korapsyon sa government projects, 30 porsyento ang natatakot, at siyam na porsyento ang dismayado o nalulungkot dahil dito.

Ipinakita sa survey na ang galit sa korapsyon sa mga government projects ay ang emosyon na naitala sa lahat ng rehiyon, socioeconomic classes, at age groups partikular sa mga Gen Z at millennials.

Ayon sa OCTA Research, ang naitalang “strong emotional response” hinggil sa isyu ay nagpapahiwatig ng “public’s continued frustration over the misuse of public funds in infrastructure programs and may suggest decline confidence in the integrity of public institutions.”

Ito rin ay nagpapahiwatig umano ng “growing demand for accountability, transparency, and decisive government action.”

Sa parehong survey, naitala rin na 83 porsyento ng mga Pinoy ang suportado sa ginawa ni Pangulong Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. na ibunyag ang korapsyon sa mga infrastructure projects.

Naitala rin ang limang inaasahan ng publiko na resulta mula sa pagpapatuloy na imbestigasyon sa flood control scam:

Holding corrupt officials and contractors accountable (68 porsyento);

Recovery of lost or misused public funds (58 porsyento);

Imprisonment of those proven guilty (58 porsyento);

Ensuring efficient implementation of quality flood control projects (41 porsyento); at

Strengthening transparency and monitoring of government infrastructure projects (34 porsyento)
