ESPERANZA stands as one of the province’s oldest and most culturally significant towns in Agusan del Sur encompassing 1,355.48 square kilometers and home to over 59,000 residents, including the Higaonon, Manobo, and Banwaon indigenous communities. Known as the “Home of Cultural Diversity,” Esperanza is deeply rooted in history, marked by the discovery of the 21-carat Golden Tara—an extraordinary pre-colonial artifact believed to date back to the 9th–10th century. Its economy thrives through agriculture, producing rice, corn, fruits, rubber, and livestock, while its people preserve time-honored craftsmanship through beadwork, woven kamuyot bags, baskets, and banig mats.

The municipality continues to grow as a tourism destination, offering the captivating Pasiyohan Sea of Clouds in Barangay Bunaguit and scenic sunrise viewpoints in Barangay Maasin, where visitors can enjoy sweeping mountain vistas and ethereal cloud formations. Agri-tourism is also flourishing, highlighted by the Happy Bee Farm in Barangay Hawilian, which serves as a farm-stay, a beekeeping learning site, and a beloved destination for local cuisine. Rich in natural beauty, culture, and tradition, Esperanza invites travelers to immerse themselves in authentic Mindanaoan experiences, especially during its annual Nalandang Festival—a vibrant celebration of indigenous heritage that showcases the town’s enduring identity and collective pride.

Demonstrating its commitment to heritage and cultural preservation, the local government inaugurated a new Cultural Heritage Museum and Tourism Office Building in September 2025. This initiative stands as testament to Esperanza dedication to safeguarding its vibrant history, traditions, and the resilient spirit that define its people.

"TEARS OF PERSEVERANCE: The Journey of an ASSCAT Graduate"

In every graduation ceremony, there are stories quietly unfolding behind the applause—stories of struggle, sacrifice, and the long journey between a dream and its fulfillment. But on the day of Mark’ graduation at Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), one story rose above the rest and moved most of Faculty and Staff to tears.

Mark, a working student known for his perseverance, stood onstage as his name was called. The applause was loud, the lights bright, and his diploma finally within reach. But despite the triumph of the moment, a deep ache lingered in his chest. His parents—his source of strength—were not by his side.

Mark’s journey was never easy. He did not finish high school the traditional way and instead earned an Alternative Learning System (ALS) certificate to pursue college. Once at ASSCAT, he became a working student, balancing classes with long hours washing dishes in the ASSCAT cafeteria. Many nights, he walked home exhausted, ga baktas rajud siya kay wala siyay pamasahe pauli, madungog niya mag daguok ang tiyan sa kagutom, but Mark never gave up. Every small task, every late night, every sacrifice was part of a bigger dream he refused to let slip away. Gusto jud siya makahuman eskwela para makahaw-as sa kalisod.

During the graduation ceremony, one of his instructors noticed Mark quietly wiping his tears. Approaching him, the teacher asked gently, ngano wala man makatambong imuhang Ginikanan? Mark hesitated before speaking, his voice soft but heavy with truth.

“Sir… maulaw man si Mama motambong sa graduation, wala siyay tarong nga sanina bisag tsinelas gani, wala. Mataranta pud siya makakita ug dagko nga sakyanan, bisag motabok sa kalsada mahadlok siya. She grew up far from places like this, and she’s afraid people might laugh at her.”

The teacher held Joshua’s shoulder and reassured him: “Mark, simplicity is never something to be ashamed of. Hardship is not shameful. What matters is that you are now living the dreams you once feared were impossible, graduate najud ka.”

Mark chose to pursue a Bachelor of Elementary Education not just for himself, but out of a heartfelt desire to make a difference. His dream is to return to his remote sitio, an Indigenous Peoples community, and inspire the children there—children who live the life he once knew. He aspires to be the teacher he never had, the one who will show them that poverty is not a barrier, that their dreams are meaningful, and that through dedication and perseverance, they can build a brighter future. Mark’s pursuit of this course is driven by a genuine wish to guide, uplift, and empower the children in his community.

The tears Mark shed that day were not tears of sadness. They were tears of gratitude, relief, and understanding. They represented years of sacrifice, quiet struggles, and the enduring love of a mother who, despite her absence, had given him everything she could. His story shows that courage is not always loud; it is often silent, steady, and persistent.

Mark’s journey reminds students that success is rarely easy. It is built through determination, resilience, and the courage to keep moving forward even when the world seems against you. His life proves that humble beginnings do not define one’s future, and that every step toward a dream, no matter how small, is worth taking. For Mark, graduation was not just the end of a chapter—it was the beginning of a life dedicated to lifting others, fueled by the lessons he learned through struggle, sacrifice, and unwavering hope.

AGUSAN MARSH TAKES ITS PLACE ON THE WORLD MAP OF WILDLIFE HAVENS 🌱🦜🐦

Agusan Marsh has officially earned global recognition as a key migratory bird habitat under the 𝗘𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗔𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻-𝗔𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗹𝘆𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 (EAAFP). This achievement marks an important step in protecting one of the Philippines’ most diverse wetland ecosystems, home to thousands of bird species that rely on the marsh during their yearly migrations.

Beyond its ecological significance, the designation also brings attention to the people who live in and around the marsh. Their everyday routines, long-practiced traditions, and genuine connection to the land remain essential in protecting the wetland—and in keeping the cultural identity of the community alive.

"A WIN FOR NATURE AND COMMUNITIES"

With its new EAAFP status, Agusan Marsh can expect stronger international collaboration, better research opportunities, and more sustainable conservation programs in the years ahead. This support will help protect the marsh as one of Asia’s most important and irreplaceable wetland sanctuaries, ensuring that both the wildlife and the communities who rely on it continue to thrive.

"BEYOND THE CAMERA: The Journey of Christian Pelong, Also known as PaLong Vlog"

Palong Vlog may be expressive and energetic on Facebook, but in person, he is quiet, polite, and serious. Behind his online personality is a young man who is hardworking, respectful, and determined to improve himself. His real name is Christian Pelong, an 18-year-old from Barangay Caimpugan, San Francisco, Agusan del Sur, who now lives in Bunawan to continue his studies. He is a first-year student at the Agusan del Sur State College of Agriculture and Technology (ASSCAT), taking a Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education major in Industrial Arts. Christian is focused on building a better future, learning new skills, and gaining knowledge that will help him reach his goals.

Christian grew up in a very simple and modest way. Without parents to guide him, life was never easy—most days, his school lunch was just "kamote" or "balanghoy" (cassava), and he had to make do with whatever little he had. He often hung out with friends or even people he didn’t know very well, just trying to fit in. Deep down, though, he felt shy and unsure of himself—sometimes even around his own followers online, wishing he could stay unnoticed until he felt confident enough to speak. Despite these feelings, he kept trying and gradually pushed himself to come out of his shell.

Growing up without parents was one of the biggest burdens Christian carried. He often found himself asking why life had to be so heavy. What‑ifs filled his mind—what if his parents were still alive, what kind of life would he have lived, would he have struggled this much? He longed for the feeling of coming home to a mother who would take care of him, feed him, or help him change his clothes, things he never experienced because his mother passed away when he was around two, and his father when he was about four. Because of this, his path was filled with challenges. In elementary school, he faced bullying—mocked for his dark skin, called ugly, and even forced to eat trash. He never fought back and often felt afraid to go to school. But entering high school became his turning point. He learned to stand up for himself, proved his capabilities, earned people’s respect, became the top student, and even served as SSG President. Through this, he realized that staying inside his comfort zone was what held him back, and once he chose courage, everything began to change.

Christian’s greatest dream is simple: to finish his studies and help his siblings. After losing their parents, they were separated—some married, and now it’s just him and his younger sibling, who is now in Grade 10, still studying. This inspires Christian to work hard so he can graduate, build a home for everyone—something big—and help his siblings start a small business. He doesn’t dream of wealth or luxury; what he truly wants is to be with his family and see them every day.

Throughout his journey, he achieved milestones that made him truly proud: graduating junior high as the top 1 student despite struggling in elementary, finishing senior high as valedictorian with high honors, and earning several recognitions, including becoming a Child Sangguniang Panlalawigan member of Agusan del Sur in 2023. From a kid who was once bullied to someone who now represents his school, barangay, and municipality, his progress feels humbling. Through vlogging, many people have come to know him, and he remains grateful to God for every accomplishment, believing he could not have reached any of this on his own.

And now, Christian wants to thank all his supporters, followers, and everyone who believed in him. He knows he wouldn’t have come this far without them. There were times when he felt like giving up, but their words, advice, and encouragement kept him going. He’s truly grateful for their constant support and will never forget each and every one of them.

23/11/2025

BAYUGAN CITY, the only component city of Agusan del Sur in the Caraga Region of Mindanao, is a landlocked urban center with a land area of about 68,877 hectares and is home to 110,313 residents across 43 barangays, according to the 2024 Census of Population. Strategically bordered by Prosperidad, Sibagat, Esperanza, and parts of Agusan del Norte and Surigao del Sur. Bayugan attained cityhood through Republic Act 9405, which was officially affirmed after legal proceedings.

Its name is believed to have originated either from the Manobo word for “pathway” or from the abundance of bayug trees historically found in the area.

As a landlocked city, Bayugan thrives through agriculture, known as the RICE GRANARY AND AGRO-INDUSTRIAL CENTER OF AGUSAN DEL SUR earning the title of the CUT-FLOWER CAPITAL OF AGUSAN DEL SUR. It produces rice, vegetables, and ornamental flowers that support local trade and supply surrounding communities, making it an important commercial hub in the province.

The city also features notable natural and cultural attractions, including waterfalls such as Jordan and Pinagalaan Falls, several caves, the Bayugan Rotunda, and the San Lorenzo Ruiz Diocesan Shrine. Its diverse community includes indigenous Manobo heritage, and cultural pride is showcased through the Kahimunan Festival every January, highlighting street dancing, floral artistry, and agricultural identity. Guided by a local government vision for an eco-friendly and agro-industrialized future, Bayugan continues to strengthen its infrastructure, commercial centers, and role as a growing economic and cultural heart of Agusan del Sur.

As a PATHWAY OF OPPORTUNITIES, the city remains committed to empowering its people and ensuring that no Bayuganon will left behind. Through improved infrastructure, livelihood initiatives, and inclusive development programs, the city continues to open doors for progress and prosperity.
