Pig Farming Tips Most Farmers Don’t Know

1. Pigs drink 2x more water than feed. If water is not clean and always available, they won’t grow fast no matter the feed.

2. Boars eat more than sows but overfeeding boars makes them lazy in mating. Keep them fit, not fat.

3. The first 3 days of a piglet’s life decide its survival. A weak piglet that doesn’t take enough colostrum may never catch up.

4. Zinc deficiency makes pigs chew walls, sticks, or even bite each other. Many farmers mistake it for “bad behavior.”

5. Dirty pens cause more loss than d!seases. Even the best antib!otics won’t help pigs raised in filth.

6. Farrowing crates don’t just stop piglet crushing, they also reduce sow stress during nursing.

7. Feed conversion ratio (FCR) is more important than just “weight.” Two pigs can weigh the same but one ate much less feed, that’s the real profit.

8. Heat stress makes pigs eat less. A simple shade or good ventilation can save months of wasted feed.

9. Record keeping is free money. Without records, you’ll never know which sow is profitable or which one is just eating your money.

10. Good genetics equals cheaper production. A high quality gilt will give more piglets, better growth, and less feed cost compared to poor breeds.
