In line with the National Disaster Resilience Month, Department of Education, Butuan City Division spearheaded the division-wide event KUMIKILOS (Kayang Umaksyon ng Mamamayan na Isabuhay ang Kahandaan ng bawat Isa para maging Ligtas sa Oras ng Sakuna), to strengthen disaster readiness among students, venued at Agusan National High School, July 30.
Students from various districts showcased their creativity and awareness through poster making, painting, brochure making, and jingle performances centered on the theme โKumikilos para sa Kahandaan, Kaligtasan, at Katatgan.
Division Disaster Risk Reduction focal person, Emelio B. Makiling emphasized that the eventโs primary goal was to prepare learners for real-life emergencies.
โThis activity equips students with the right knowledge and presence of mind during calamities,โ Makiling said. โIn emergencies, they will know exactly how to respond, how to protect themselves, and how to act quickly, as the theme of KUMIKILOS reminds us, we must move and be aware of what needs to be done.โ
Moreover, the focal person highlighted the importance of proactive learning in disaster readiness.
โWe want to inspire every learner to take the right actions before, during, and after a disaster,โ he said. โPreparedness begins with awareness, and awareness leads to saving lives.โ
The event was made possible through the collaboration of multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).
Through engaging and creative competitions, Project KUMIKILOS empowered students to stay informed, proactive, and resilient in the face of emergencies.
