After 17 years of legal delays, Ramon Ang’s San Miguel Corporation (SMC) has officially acquired a 3.8% stake in Meralco from Land Bank of the Philippines for ₱3.9 billion.

Through its power unit, San Miguel Global Power (SMGP), SMC secured 43.23 million Meralco shares at ₱90 apiece—far below the current market price of ₱545 per share. The acquisition, executed via block sale on the Philippine Stock Exchange, was based on a 2008 agreement that Landbank failed to fulfill, prompting a court order to finalize the deal.

₱20-BILLION WINDFALL
With the massive price gap, SMC now sits on an unrealized gain nearing ₱20 billion—a major boost to its balance sheet. Analysts say the move gives SMC the flexibility to either hold for dividends, sell for profit, or leverage the stake in strategic energy partnerships.

POWER MOVE
While the 3.8% stake doesn’t grant control, it adds a key piece to SMC’s energy empire, enhancing its presence in both power generation and distribution. Ramon Ang has yet to announce the conglomerate’s next move—but with this acquisition, SMC just pulled off one of its smartest plays in years.
