SM launches expanded Share Shoes program for underprivileged students

SM is launching an expanded Share Shoes program this October through the SM Store to support underprivileged students, aligned with the 100th birth anniversary of its founder, Mr. Henry “Tatang” Sy Sr.

The program will benefit 20,000 kids from 100 public schools nationwide, from the previous year’s 16,000 from 80 public schools. It will be coordinated through 100 partner organizations and beneficiaries. A key element of the program involves the participation of SM Store customers themselves: For a minimum PHP3,000 single-receipt purchase, customers have the opportunity to sponsor a brand-new pair of shoes for a student for only PHP100.

A decent pair of shoes makes a difference in the lives of many Filipino school children. In 2023, the Philippine Institute for Developmental Studies reported that poverty remains a major barrier to education, with many Filipino children lacking even the basic necessities like proper footwear.

By joining this collaborative effort for social good, customers are not just shopping — they are creating a lasting impact, extending hope and support to those in need. The act of giving a pair of shoes not only meets a basic need but also sends a message of encouragement to students, assuring them that through education their dreams will be fulfilled. SM Store invites its customers to provide more than just footwear but also a path to greater possibilities for Filipino students.

Chinabank welcomes Michelle Dee as first ever brand ambassador

Chinabank has signed up its first ever brand ambassador, the reigning Miss Universe Philippines Michelle Marquez Dee. The collaboration was formalized on February 14, 2024 at the Chinabank head office in Makati City.

The beauty queen, actress, host, athlete, and model is a fitting and inspiring representative for Chinabank. Michelle, who has won the hearts and minds of Filipinos and the world with her charisma, authenticity, and sense of purpose, is redefining contemporary Filipino culture on a global stage. Her lifelong autism acceptance and inclusivity advocacy has led her to a degree in BS Psychology and to use her platform and her work with the Autism Society of the Philippines to create awareness about the condition. With Michelle on board, Chinabank is strengthening its brand presence and building a profound connection with the new generation of dynamic and forward-thinking banking customers.

“This engagement with Michelle Dee signifies the beginning of many things to come. For us, Michelle is family. But beyond her obvious lineage to the bank's co-founders, we firmly believe that Michelle has the qualities to aptly represent a bank with a storied history and an unwavering commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable future for every Filipino,” Chinabank President & CEO Romeo D. Uyan Jr. said during the contract signing.

Michelle expressed her happiness and excitement for her new role, noting that she and Chinabank are a good fit as they share the same high regard for building trust, making an impact, and bringing about change.

“Chinabank isn’t just any bank, it’s been a beacon of trust and resilience for over a century. Now that’s a lot of years of making a difference in people’s lives and making dreams come true, but it’s also the spirit of making a difference that really resonates with every Filipino heart,” she said. “I would like to keep it real. I’m here to share my stories and the incredible work Chinabank does… I can’t wait to make memories and make such ground breaking opportunities for everyone around us as well.”

Chinabank founder Dee C. Chuan was Michelle Dee’s paternal grand-uncle. Her grandfather was former Chinabank Chairman Dee K. Chiong whose leadership shaped the bank into prominence. He also led the bank’s early foray into computer technology, becoming the first bank in Southeast Asia to process deposit accounts online.

Chinabank is the fourth largest private universal bank in the Philippines. The bank is set to launch an advertising campaign featuring Michelle as it continues to innovate and improve its products and services with a keen focus on its customers.

Good Food Ideas at SM

We enjoyed eating and drinking a lot in the past month as we celebrated holidays with family and friends. It’s 2024, and it is about time to bounce back to our healthy diet because as we said health is wealth and here’s some new diet ideas to start the year right here at SM.

More Protein, Less Meat

Some plant-based foods, such as soybean products, seitan, beans, and lentils contain high amounts of protein that can replace meat in your daily consumption. You can also find protein in nuts, whole grains like quinoa and amaranth, and h**p seeds. Starts protein-forward products with mushrooms, walnuts, tempeh, and legumes are expected to steal the spotlight over complex meat alternatives.

Plant-Based Foodie

Plant-based fish alternatives can provide essential nutrients such as protein and minerals to someone eating a vegan or plant-based diet such as algae, seaweed, legumes, and a range of plant-based proteins. These ingredients are thoughtfully chosen for their ability to mimic the taste and texture of seafood while maintaining its nutrients. Other alternative for seafoods are tofu, banana blossom, and jackfruit are popular substitutes for fish due to their texture.

Gut health still a trend

Gut health will continue to be a growing area of interest for the years focusing on Probiotics — which include yogurt, kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut, fermented cheeses, tempeh, miso, pickled vegetables, and even drinks like kombucha — have always been the leader on peoples’ gut-loving food lists. You can find them in bananas, blueberries, artichokes, oatmeal, spinach, and onions, to name a few.

Spice Level – Up

Spicy foods contain antioxidants, which can aid our immune system. Antioxidants work to fight off free radicals, which assist in generating inflammatory diseases such as heart disease, cancer and autoimmune disorders which positively impact our immune system. This 2024, don’t forget to add spices like black pepper, paprika, turmeric, wasabi, chili peppers and other imported sauces and dips to add to your meals.

The SM Sunday/Weekend Market is the best opportunity to find more of this good food suggestion of freshly harvested products. It is a joint initiative of SM Supermalls, SM Cares, and the SM Foundation Inc. (SMFI) which spotlights its Kabalikat at sa Kabuhayan (KSK) program. This helps hundreds of local food producers by providing them with high-traffic locations at SM malls nationwide to display and market their products to weekend shoppers, employees, and tenants.

Let's go shopping together for healthy choices at SM Supermarket and SaveMore Market and SMFI Sunday/Weekend Market to start the year with foods that make your body cells smile back at you!

Every drop matters at SM:
How to save water even during the rainy season

The wet season is here! But that does not mean that we should waste our water supply. While many parts of the country have observed heavy rainfall recently, some parts of the country still experience insufficient rain, which further declines the water level supply in our reservoir dams. It is no secret that water is an essential resource used every day for cleaning ourselves, the food we eat, and our surroundings to prevent the spread of diseases. To help alleviate the impacts of climate change, here are nine practical strategies to save water.

1. Reduce Shower Time: Shorten showers by aiming for about just five minutes, to conserve water and energy for heating.

2. Don’t Leave the Tap Water Running: To prevent unnecessary water waste, turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth, washing your face, and cleaning the dishes.

3. Reuse Water: Reuse water used for washing rice and vegetables or rinsing dishes to water indoor plants. Laundry water can also be used for toilet flushing.

4. Sweep Instead of Hose: Save water by sweeping the dirt on sidewalks and roads instead of using a hose to clean them.

5. Use Only Full Loads of Laundry: Wait until you have a full load of laundry before using your washing machine to maximize water efficiency.

6. Fix Leaks ASAP: Immediately fix even small leaks in your home's plumbing system because it can eventually waste a lot of water.

7. Water Plants Sensibly: Water your plants in the early morning or late evening to minimize evaporation.

8. Collect Rainwater: Set up rain barrels or containers to capture rainwater for outside uses like cleaning, watering plants, or filling toilet bowls.

As a part of every community that it serves, SM Supermalls is aware of the fundamental role it can play in promoting water security and conservation, championing water reuse, and being the catalyst of a sustainable solution. Water catchment basins in 25 malls have been installed to help prevent flooding as well as soil erosion during heavy downpours. In its malls nationwide, water is reused for non-potable use, such as cleaning the malls, flushing toilets, and watering plants. Last July, SM City Baguio introduced the first of its-kind in a mall-setting facility that converts rainwater into potable water and contributes to the city's water management measures.

9. Raise awareness to others: Spread the word about water conservation among family, friends, and neighbors to create a positive impact and viable solutions.

Keep in mind that every little bit helps, and by putting these water-saving tips into practice, we can significantly contribute to preserving this vital resource for everyone’s future.

SM brings Cordilleran Artworks to Cabanatuan City

The Pasakalye Group of Artists (PGA), Baguio City’s art community, launched an art exhibit called PADEGKA (to create) at the SM City Cabanatuan on Friday (January 27) until February 18 at the 2nd Level of the mall.

PGA continues to strengthen its partnership with SM in promoting and preserving the City’s arts, culture, and heritage by mounting exhibit in different cities where SM is located and it was attended by other known artist in Nueva Ecija like Fredi Agunoy (metal scrap artist) and Gromyko Semper (symbol and aesthetic artist).

Marvin Mauro Magtoto assistant mall manager said that the art masterpieces in the exhibit will not just support each artist economically, but this initiative also envisions being a venue of cultural exchange in every city or province on its roadshow in different SM malls.

"We are very honored to showcase this kind of exhibit at SM City Cabanatuan as it brings art and craft familiarity to our fledgling artists and mall goers. We want them to know that SM is the venue where they can showcase their talent in visual arts" he added.

As a result, artists in Nueva Ecija through Agunoy and Semper will soon form their own artist group comprise of masters and young artists to also expand their horizon in a collaborative kind of exhibits like PADEGKA and to re-create SM project like My City, My SM, My Art which they also participated in 2017.

The exhibit launch was also attended by Provincial Tourism Head Atty. Jose San Pedro with his commitment in supporting local artists in the province.

Staying true to its commitment, SM Supermalls has prepared more venues in its malls in North Luzon to house the next legs of this Art Tour. This initiative aims to continuously provide opportunities for the creative community, particularly in visual arts, to promote and celebrate Filipino artistry.
