Remembering Martial Law: 53 Years Later

Fifty-three years ago, on September 21, 1972, Martial Law was declared in the Philippinesโ€”a period often glorified as a โ€œgolden ageโ€ but, in truth, one of the nationโ€™s darkest chapters. President Ferdinand E. Marcos claimed it was necessary to defend the country and promised a โ€œNew Societyโ€ under his rule.

What followed, however, was far from a โ€œNew Society.โ€ Authoritarian control took hold: dissent was suppressed, independent media silenced, and thousands of students, activists, and ordinary citizens faced arbitrary arrests, detention, torture, and extrajudicial killings. Democratic institutions were dismantled, leaving a legacy of suffering that continues to this day.

As we remember this pivotal event, let us uphold the values of freedom, justice, and accountability. This anniversary serves as a reminder to remain vigilant, combat misinformation, and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our democracy.

Never Again. Never Forget.

๐—˜๐——๐—œ๐—ง๐—ข๐—ฅ๐—œ๐—”๐—Ÿ | Block Corruption, Chain the Budget

In the wake of staggering revelations of corruption in our flood-control projectsโ€”where billions of pesos meant to protect our communities were instead washed away by greedโ€”the clamor for genuine government transparency has never been louder. Allegations of 25% kickbacks, missing documentation, and substandard or even ghost projects have painted a disturbing picture of how public money can be lost in the shadows of bureaucracy. Once again, Filipinos are left asking: Where did our money go?

Senator Bam Aquino has recently passed the Senate Bill No. 1330 or the Blockchain the Budget Bill that aims to build a transparent record as a digital public asset (DPA).

Blockchain technology, once thought to be limited to cryptocurrencies, has the chance to be a revolutionary tool for accountability. Unlike the traditional system, blockchain records cannot be altered or hidden. Every peso, from its allocation by the Department of Budget and Management down to its use in all units of the government, can be tracked, verified, and audited by the public in real time. It turns secrecy into transparency, and doubt into trust.

At a time when surveys show corruption as the top concern of Filipinos, even surpassing inflation and crime, this proposed measure is more than just legislation. It is a lifeline to restore public trust, safeguard taxpayer money, and put an end to the decades-long cycle of untraceable transactions and impunity.

Critics may argue that such a system is ambitious or complex, but can we afford not to be ambitious when corruption siphons off an estimated โ‚ฑ700 billion every yearโ€”roughly 20 percent of our national budget? The Flood-Control Scandal is just the latest reminder of how vulnerable our current systems are. Technology has already made online banking secure and efficient; why should the same tools not be applied to our public coffers?

More importantly, this bill shifts the power back to where it rightfully belongs: the people. Citizens, civil society groups, and the Commission on Audit will have access to the same immutable ledger of transactions. This democratization of data ensures that transparency will no longer be an abstract promise, it will be a daily reality.

The outrage felt today must be channeled into concrete reforms that will change the way our nation governs tomorrow. Supporting the โ€˜Blockchain the Budget Billโ€™ is not simply about adopting new technology; it is about making corruption harder, accountability stronger, and democracy steeper.

Secrecy has long been the fertilizer of corruption. Transparency, powered by blockchain, is the antidote we need. The chains that once bound us to a culture of impunity can now be forged into a chain of trust. The choice is clear: block the cycle of corruption, and make every peso count for the Filipino people.
