Road Trip to Palayan, Nueva Ecija

Palayan City, the capital of Nueva Ecija, is known as a peaceful and progressive city at the heart of Central Luzon. Surrounded by vast rice fields, Palayan lives up to its identity as part of the “Rice Granary of the Philippines.” The city is home to important government offices, military institutions, and growing residential communities, making it a center for governance and development in the province. Palayan also offers a calm lifestyle, clean surroundings, and expanding opportunities in agriculture, education, and local business. With its steady growth and strong community spirit, Palayan City continues to shape the future of Nueva Ecija.

Every morning when I open our window here in the Philippines, the first thing I see is the neighborhood basketball court already alive. Kids in slippers taking their first shots, others stretching like they’re warming up for the NBA, and teens squeezing in a quick game before school.

And every night, it’s the same scene—this time with louder cheers, brighter smiles, and that familiar thud of the ball echoing through the street. It’s become my daily soundtrack.

As an American living here, I always knew basketball was big back home… but nothing prepared me for how huge it is in the Philippines. I’ve learned it’s more than just a sport here—it’s a community, a language, a part of everyday life. Courts are everywhere, from big arenas to tiny makeshift hoops nailed onto coconut trees.

Watching how everyone comes together, regardless of age or background, has been one of the things I love most about living here. It’s basketball culture unlike anywhere else in the world—and now I get why Filipinos say it’s not just a game, it’s a lifestyle.

Living here in the Philippines has truly shown me how magical Christmas can be. Back in the US, the holidays feel special—but here, the celebration lasts for three whole months. The moment the ber months start, everyone’s energy shifts. People become more joyful, more enthusiastic, more excited to decorate, cook, sing, and come together.

As an American married to a Filipina, I’ve come to love how Christmas isn’t just a holiday here—it’s a season of connection. Every gathering becomes a chance to laugh, share stories, and be grateful for friends, family, and the little things that make life warm and meaningful. It’s a beautiful reminder that joy doesn’t need to be complicated; sometimes it’s simply being together.

Filipinos love balot not just because of its rich, savory taste, but because it’s deeply tied to culture, tradition, and community. Balot is more than a street food—it’s a symbol of resilience, bravery, and shared experiences.

Why Filipinos Love Balot:
Balot is comforting, flavorful, and widely accessible. Many Filipinos grew up seeing it sold in neighborhoods at night, often shouted out by the iconic “Baloooooooooot!” Aside from the taste, it’s a unique bonding food—friends often gather around a warm balot, add a little salt or vinegar, and share stories. For many, it’s also nostalgic, reminding them of simpler days.

Cultural Beliefs About Balot:
Filipino beliefs around balot are a mix of tradition and fun superstition:

• Strength and Vitality – Many believe balot gives extra energy or “lakas ng katawan,” making it popular among workers and athletes.
• Good for Men’s Health – A common belief is that balot boosts stamina and masculinity. It’s often joked about as a “pangpahaba ng buhay” or a food that builds endurance.
• Courage Food – Eating balot is seen as a test of bravery, especially for foreigners. Filipinos take pride in introducing it to guests as a sign of cultural confidence.
• Good Luck Symbol – Some view balot as a “swerte” food because it represents life and growth, making it meaningful in gatherings and celebrations.

In the end, balot is loved because it’s flavorful, meaningful, and a strong part of Filipino identity. It carries stories—of family, tradition, and shared laughter over a warm, humble egg.

Did you know the Philippines once celebrated Thanksgiving? During the American colonial period in the early 1900s, the country adopted several U.S. traditions—including Thanksgiving. It continued for a while even after independence, but eventually faded because it wasn’t deeply rooted in Filipino culture.

Filipinos have their own beautiful ways of showing gratitude. Instead of a single Thanksgiving Day, they celebrate through colorful fiestas honoring patron saints, heartfelt family gatherings, and of course, the famously long and joyful Christmas season. In the Philippines, gratitude isn’t confined to one day—it’s woven into celebrations all year round.

Living here in the Philippines with my wife has shown me so much kindness, beauty, and warmth, and for that, I am truly thankful. Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving filled with joy, connection, and plenty of good food!

Big shoutout to the amazing caddies who know the course inside out—helping us line up our putts, read the greens, and find the perfect spots to hit. Couldn’t ask for better guidance (or better weather)! ⛳️😊
