FINALLY, THE TRUTH IS SPOKEN!
By Bishop Emi Domingo
On November 4, 2025, under the approval of Pope Leo XIV, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DCF) released a doctrinal note titled Mater Populi Fidelis. This document made a historic clarification on Marian devotion, stating: âIt would not be appropriate to use the title âCo-redemptrixâ. This title ⌠(can) create confusion and an imbalance in the harmony of the truths of the Christian faith.â (Reuters, USCCB). The note further explains that Mary âcould not have been the mediatrix of the grace that she herself receivedâ (USCCB), and that calling her âco-redemptrix or co-mediatrix ⌠carries the risk of eclipsing the exclusive role of Jesus Christâ in redemption (USCCB). These words, affirmed by the Pope, echo the heart of the gospelâthat only Jesus is the Savior and Redeemer of mankind.
This pronouncement is not a demotion of Mary but a divine alignment to truth. It magnifies her true role as the humble servant who said yes to Godâs plan, not as a co-redeemer but as the one who bore the Redeemer. The Scriptures clearly teach that salvation belongs to Christ alone: âFor there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesusâ (1 Timothy 2:5). âSalvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be savedâ (Acts 4:12). Jesus Himself declared, âI am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Meâ (John 14:6). Even Mary acknowledged her need for grace when she said, âMy spirit rejoices in God my Saviorâ (Luke 1:47).
To our Catholic kababayan, this is a moment to rejoice, not to resist. No less than your own Churchâs highest leaderâPope Leo XIVâhas reminded the world that Christâs finished work on the cross is enough: complete, perfect, and eternal. The recognition that only Jesus saves does not lessen Maryâs valued role; rather, it highlights her obedience and humility, as she always pointed to the Lord Jesusâjust as she once said to the servants at the wedding in Cana, âDo whatever he tells youâ (John 2:5).
In light of Pope Leo XIVâs statement, may every believerâCatholic and non-Catholic alikeâembrace this liberating truth: âIt is by grace you have been saved, through faithâand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godâ (Ephesians 2:8). Grace calls us not to idolize any human, but to fix our eyes solely on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
