FINALLY, THE TRUTH IS SPOKEN!
By Bishop Emi Domingo

On November 4, 2025, under the approval of Pope Leo XIV, the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith (DCF) released a doctrinal note titled Mater Populi Fidelis. This document made a historic clarification on Marian devotion, stating: “It would not be appropriate to use the title ‘Co-redemptrix’. This title … (can) create confusion and an imbalance in the harmony of the truths of the Christian faith.” (Reuters, USCCB). The note further explains that Mary “could not have been the mediatrix of the grace that she herself received” (USCCB), and that calling her “co-redemptrix or co-mediatrix … carries the risk of eclipsing the exclusive role of Jesus Christ” in redemption (USCCB). These words, affirmed by the Pope, echo the heart of the gospel—that only Jesus is the Savior and Redeemer of mankind.

This pronouncement is not a demotion of Mary but a divine alignment to truth. It magnifies her true role as the humble servant who said yes to God’s plan, not as a co-redeemer but as the one who bore the Redeemer. The Scriptures clearly teach that salvation belongs to Christ alone: “For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5). “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus Himself declared, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6). Even Mary acknowledged her need for grace when she said, “My spirit rejoices in God my Savior” (Luke 1:47).

To our Catholic kababayan, this is a moment to rejoice, not to resist. No less than your own Church’s highest leader—Pope Leo XIV—has reminded the world that Christ’s finished work on the cross is enough: complete, perfect, and eternal. The recognition that only Jesus saves does not lessen Mary’s valued role; rather, it highlights her obedience and humility, as she always pointed to the Lord Jesus—just as she once said to the servants at the wedding in Cana, “Do whatever he tells you” (John 2:5).

In light of Pope Leo XIV’s statement, may every believer—Catholic and non-Catholic alike—embrace this liberating truth: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8). Grace calls us not to idolize any human, but to fix our eyes solely on Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith (Hebrews 12:2).
