In every institutionโwhether in schools, organizations, or communitiesโpositions are given to individuals who are expected to lead, inspire, and serve. A title is not merely a label attached to a name; it carries responsibility, accountability, and the expectation of exemplary conduct. Yet, there are instances when the title someone holds does not reflect in their actions, attitude, or behavior.
A position should represent the character of the person who holds it. Leadership demands integrity, humility, and a sincere commitment to the people one serves. Unfortunately, some individuals treat their positions as a symbol of privilege rather than a platform for service. They become overly entitled, believing that the title itself is enough to command respect. In reality, respect is not demandedโit is earned through consistent actions and responsible leadership.
Even more concerning is when individuals in positions refuse to embrace the responsibilities that come with their role. Rather than accepting work assignments and contributing to the improvement of the organization, they choose to remain in their comfort zone. They avoid challenges, resist additional responsibilities, and pass tasks to others who are willing to do the work they refuse to undertake. Such behavior reflects not leadership but indifference.
An entitled leader often becomes insensitive to the needs of the organization and the people within it. While others strive and exert effort for progress and development, these individuals remain passive observers, benefiting from a title they scarcely deserve. Their unwillingness to act, to contribute, or even to acknowledge the burden they place on others slowly erodes the spirit of teamwork and shared responsibility.
When someone clings to authority but fails to embody the values that the position represents, the title becomes hollow. Positions without accountability creates a gap between what is expected and what is practiced. A leader who cannot demonstrate discipline, fairness, professionalism, and dedication weakens not only their own credibility but also the trust of the people they are meant to lead.
True leadership is reflected in everyday actionsโhow a person treats others, how they respond to challenges, and how they carry themselves even when no one is watching. A position should elevate a person's sense of duty, not inflate their sense of entitlement. Those who hold titles must remember that their behavior sets the tone for the entire community.
In the end, a position alone does not define a leader. It is character that gives meaning to the title. Without integrity, humility, responsibility, and a willingness to serve, a position becomes nothing more than a wordโempty, powerless, and undeserving of the respect it demands.
Because leadership is not proven by the title one holds, but by the example one sets.
