It’s Friday the 13th again— a day that strikes genuine fear into the hearts of many people. But if you run into a Catholic who is faithfully following the teachings of the Church, you won’t find them in distress today. That’s because Catholics have found something that far surpasses any superstitious belief: the truth of the Gospel.

Superstitions have long been a part of human history and our shared cultural experience. The Catechism says that superstition is “the deviation of religious feeling and of the practices this feeling imposes” (2111).

In keeping with the first commandment, it goes on to describe “all practices of magic or sorcery, by which one attempts to tame occult powers, so as to place them at one’s service and have a supernatural power over others” as “gravely contrary to the virtue of religion” (2117). If we engage with the occult or other expressions of superstition, what we are really revealing is a lack of trust in God’s goodness. The desire at the root of superstition is control over one’s destiny. If we wish to control our own destiny and will do whatever it takes to do so, then we do not truly trust in God’s loving plan for us.

If you have fallen into superstition, do not fear. Most of the time, this happens unknowingly. The important thing is to begin again. Go to confession and ask for the grace of a pure trust in God’s loving plan for you. There is no story for your life that you can create that is better than the one to which God is inviting you.

Keep the Catholic Faith, and disregard the scare of the Friday the 13th Fate!

“We need to fully utilize and implement all available and relevant policies to capably respond to the rapid rise of HIV in the country [1].”

“In Botswana, for example, condom sales rose from one million in 1993 to three million in 2001 while HIV prevalence among urban pregnant women rose from 27 percent to 45 per-cent [2].”

“From the early to the late 1990s,HIV seroprevalence rates in Uganda dropped by two-thirds – from nearly 30% in 1990 to less than 10% in 1998 in pregnant women, from nearly 25% in 1990 to 14% in the mid-1990s in military conscripts, and from 22% in 1991to 6% in 1999 in the general population [3].”

“Faith-based organizations play an integral role in the national response by promoting abstinence and faithfulness (…) To date, there are no clear examples of a country that has turned back a generalized epidemic primarily through condom promotion [3].”

“On the basis of data from the World Health Organization, in Swaziland where 42.6% have HIV, only 5% of the population is Catholic. In Botswana, where 37% of the adult population is HIV infected, only 4% of the population is Catholic. In South Africa, 22% of the population is HIV infected, and only 6% is Catholic. In Uganda, with 43% of the population Catholic, the proportion of HIV infected adults is 4% [6]”

With great joy, we welcome our new Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV. As he begins this sacred mission, we pray that his leadership may bring renewal, peace, and strength to the Holy Mother Church—the flock of Jesus Christ.

Most of us fall into a bit of a spiritual rut every now and then. It happens. But no matter what time of the month or year it is, it’s always a good time to expand our horizons in a way that shakes things up and strengthens our Christian faith.

As Catholics, there are many opportunities to do so. Here are seven suggestions that can help us all.

✨1. GO TO EUCHARISTIC ADORATION

Go to Eucharistic Adoration: A holy young woman once said that she attends Adoration often because she needs “God’s love right now” and she needs to “be with Him.” She said that because Jesus died on the cross to save us, she believed she could “save” Him by going to Adoration to experience Christ’s love. What better gift can we give Jesus (and ourselves) than to spend time adoring Our Savior?

✨2. JOIN A CHURCH MINISTRY

Join a Church Ministry: God gives us all unique gifts. Sharing them with our fellow parishioners in service of God, The Church and our neighbors is an excellent way to show God our appreciation. Our parishes are also a great place to nurture our gifts, so we can share them with our communities and our world.

✨3. PRAY THE ROSARY

Pray the Rosary: In St. John Paul II’s “Rosarium Virginis Mariae,” the beloved pope stated “With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience the depths of His love.” With information available on many Catholic websites, at religious bookstores, in churches and on Catholic cable channels, it is easy to learn how to pray the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary. It’s a beautiful way to draw closer to Jesus.

✨4. HELP PEOPLE IN NEED

Help People in Need: We are all called to see the face of Christ in others. At the same time, we are all called to let the light of Christ shine within us. Volunteering to help those in need and joyfully giving what we can to assist them is a wonderful way to fulfill both callings. Praying for people on a prayer list and souls in Purgatory are also great ways to bless others.

✨5. RECEIVE THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION

Receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation: Although it’s a sacrament that many of us shy away from, receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation is a blessing. It’s a powerful way to ask God’s forgiveness for our sins and a powerful way to receive that mercy. It’s an invitation to start anew.

✨6. PARTICIPATE IN A RETREAT OR WORKSHOP

Participate in a Retreat or Workshop: Christian retreats, seminars and workshops can enrich our faith in various ways. They can reignite our passion for God’s Word and our love for Jesus. They can also inspire us by giving us new ways to pray to, praise and serve God. The blessings of fellowship and friendship also enhance our lives in amazing ways.

✨7. SPEND TIME READING AND MEDITATING ON GOD’S WORD

Spend Time Reading and Meditating on God’s Word: In Ephesians 6:17, the apostle, Paul, writes “And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” If we hope to understand God’s teachings and let them guide us, spending quality time with The Bible will help us accomplish this goal. By exploring our faith in new ways, we can find many treasures. Inspiration, peace of mind, wisdom, compassion, fellowship and the saving love of Jesus can be found along the path. If we resolve to refresh our faith through any of these opportunities, our journey as Catholics can be revitalized in ways we never imagined.
