CHAPTER 2: Walking In The Spirit (Revised with Visionary Principles)

In the last chapter, we learned that the Christian life is CHRIST LIVING IN ME (Galatians 2:20)! Christ wants to live out His life in me (Philippians 2:13 - "it is God which worketh in you"). But why do I seem to have so many problems with living? Even though I know I'm saved and have eternal life, why don't I always enjoy this abundant life which I have? Something must be wrong! Even though I'm trusting the Lord Jesus Christ and I know Him as my Savior, I still have problems. I know that "CHRIST IN ME" is never unkind (see Chapter 1), but often I find that I am still UNKIND, even though I'm a Christian. Why is this so? Often I'm selfish. Sometimes I worry about things. At times I am afraid. I still have a problem with SIN (doing things I know are not right) and BAD HABITS. What's wrong? Why are there times when it seems as though the Lord Jesus is not living His life in me?

Was Jesus ever unkind? Was He ever selfish? Was He ever worried or afraid? Did He ever sin or do what He knew was wrong? No! If Christ is living in me, then why do I often do these things?

In Chapter 1 we learned how important it is to not get in the way but to let Christ live in me. That's often the problem. We get in the way of the Lord and do not allow Him to live His life in us. We live our life instead of letting Him live His life in us.

There are two ways that a believer can walk. One way pleases the Lord and the other way does not please Him at all! According to Romans 8:4, a person can walk after the FLESH or a person can walk after the SPIRIT (see also Galatians 5:16-17). The "FLESH" is another way to talk about MY OLD SINFUL SELF. When I walk after the flesh, I am getting in the way of the Lord and not allowing Him to live His life in me. Those things that I do always come out wrong. MY OLD SINFUL SELF gets in the way. Those things that Christ does in me always come out right! What I produce is BAD (unacceptable to God, not as God wants or requires, not pleasing to God-Romans 8:8); what God produces in me is GOOD!

Sally is a wonderful cook. She makes the most delicious soup you have ever tasted. Joe is a terrible cook. His soup is not very tasty and you can't even swallow a spoonful of it without making an unpleasant face. Now suppose Sally and Joe both make soup for you in the kitchen and when they are done they bring out two cups of soup (but you do not know which cook made which cup). The first cup tastes bitter and you don't even feel like finishing it. Which cook made this cup? Joe. The second cup is so good that you do not even need to put crackers in it! Which cook made this soup? Sally. We can easily tell who produced the good soup.

Doctor Flynn has terrible handwriting, but his secretary, Nancy, has very neat handwriting. Can you tell who wrote the following notes?

- NOTE 1: (Example of messy, illegible writing)
- NOTE 2: (Example of neat, legible writing)

Who wrote NOTE 1? Dr. Flynn. Who wrote NOTE 2? Nancy. We can easily tell who produced the bad handwriting and who produced the good handwriting.

Hank's Orchard produces the best apples in town. Henry's Orchard produces the worst apples in town. Most of them are rotten and no one really seems to enjoy these apples except the worms. One day your Mother comes home with a bag of the best apples ever tasted. Where do you think she got them from? Hank's Orchard.

When I walk in the Spirit, God produces wonderful fruit (see GALATIANS 5:22-23). When I walk in the flesh, the things which I produce are terrible (see GALATIANS 5:19-21)! Suppose I have been jealous and selfish and unkind. Right away what should I realize? (circle the correct answer)

- a. That's the flesh (MY OLD SINFUL SELF)
- b. That's the Spirit (GOD WORKING OUT HIS LIFE IN ME)

If the Spirit of God is working in my life, what are some of the things that He will produce (Galatians 5:22-23)? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Do you think God wants to produce these things in your life? Yes! Then what is it that sometimes goes wrong?

How Do I Get in the Way Of God Working Out His Life in Me?

1. I Get In The Way By GRIEVING THE HOLY SPIRIT.

In Ephesians 4:30 we read, "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God." Normally parents have a love for their children and they are sometimes GRIEVED (made sad, even to the point of feeling pain) when their children go the wrong way or do the wrong things. In the same way, God is GRIEVED when a believer sins and goes the wrong way. Some of the sins that GRIEVE God are mentioned in Ephesians 4:25, 28, 29, 31. Can you list some of these? Lying, stealing, corrupting talk, bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, malice.

Sometimes when we travel on the road we will see a sign that says, "WRONG WAY!" (especially if we were about to turn the wrong way onto a one-way street or onto a divided highway). God is grieved when a believer goes the WRONG WAY and God cannot work in that person as long as he is headed in the wrong direction.

Would you eat off of a dirty plate (covered with the remains of breakfast)? No! Would you eat off of that same plate after it was washed and made clean? Yes! Suppose your toothbrush were to fall on a dirty floor. Would you use it to brush your teeth? No! Would you clean it up and then use it? Yes! Suppose you were waiting to see the dentist who has already seen four people before you. Would you want him to wash his hands or put on clean gloves before he puts his fingers in your mouth? Yes!

God wants to use His believers. He wants to use you, but God will not use a believer who is filthy. God will not use a believer who is unclean. But God will use a person as soon as he is clean. Of course, we are not talking about the filth that comes from dirt, but the filth that comes from SIN. Has God made a way for the believer to get clean (1 JOHN 1:9)? Yes! What must the believer do (1 John 1:9)? Confess our sins.

2. I Get In The Way By QUENCHING THE SPIRIT.

In 1 Thessalonians 5:19 we read, "Quench not the Spirit." Suppose you built a fire outside in a fireplace at a campsite. Could this fire be made to work in useful ways? Yes! Could it be used to boil water? Yes! Could it be used to cook hot dogs? Yes! Could it be used to toast marshmallows? Yes! Would it be able to throw off heat to warm those bodies that huddle up close to it? Yes! What would happen if you were to quench this fire with water? It would go out! Could it be used to do those things mentioned above? No!

The Spirit of God wants to do a mighty work in each believer. He is like a mighty flame and He is able to help the believer burn brightly for the Lord. He wants to produce wonderful fruit in us as we have already seen. He wants to live out the life of the Lord Jesus Christ in us. But often we QUENCH HIM, and we do not let Him do His wonderful work!

Driving in the car, you have often seen a sign that says "YIELD." This sign means that you are to let the other car have its way. You are not to have your own way, but you are to allow that other car to have its way. God wants us to YIELD to Him (Romans 6:13) and to let Him have His way. We QUENCH GOD when we do not allow Him to have His way. The believer who quenches God is like the person who goes through a red light and stops at a green light! Sometimes God says "NO!" and we go. Sometimes God says "GO!" and we stop. We are not letting God have His way. We are saying, "Not God's will, but MINE be done!" (compare Luke 22:42).

Who is on the THRONE of my life?

FILLED WITH SELF

- (Write your own name) is the BOSS of my life!

FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT (Ephesians 5:18)

- The LORD Jesus Christ is the BOSS of my life!

The person who YIELDS to God is able to say and to pray:

- "Lord, I'll be whatever You want me to be!"
- "Lord, I'll do whatever You want me to do!"
- "Lord, I'll go wherever You want me to go!"
- "Lord, I'll say whatever You want me to say!"

God does not force Himself on a person. He works out His life in the believer who is not standing in God's way (not being a pain or a grief to God) and who is YIELDED (letting God have His way)!

3. I Get In The Way By NOT WALKING IN THE SPIRIT.

In Galatians 5:16 we read, "Walk in the Spirit and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh." Walking in the Spirit means that I am DEPENDING on the Spirit to help me to walk in the right way, which I cannot do by myself. If I try to live the Christian life without the Spirit's help, I will fall and fail (Isaiah 41:10, 13, 14).

Imagine a person walking high above the ground on a tightrope. This person is very skilled and he does very well. In fact, he does so well that he says to himself, "I'm really good at doing this! I'm so good that I don't even need this rope. I'll just walk on the air!" Of course, as soon as he stops depending on the rope, he falls! A tightrope walker needs the rope every second, and without the rope, he would fall!

Imagine a woman who is water skiing. Suddenly she thinks, "Water skiing is so easy! Who needs this rope? I do not want to always stay behind the boat. I want to go wherever I please on this lake." So she lets go of the handle and immediately begins to sink! She did fine as long as she allowed herself to be pulled by the rope, but as soon as she tried to do it by herself she failed and got all wet! [Note: With water skiing you have to allow the rope to pull you. If you pull on the rope (that is, pull it towards you), you could easily lose your balance and fall. This is a good illustration of letting God carry us as we hold onto Him and stay focused on Him.]

A Christian cannot live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit! Jesus said, "Without Me, ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). It is easy to forget that the Lord's help is needed at all times. For example, you might be having a difficult test in school and you might silently pray to God, "Lord, help me to do well on this test!" You are depending on God to carry you through and to help you to do what is right. But after the test is over you go out for recess to play some sports. You might think, "Who needs the Lord to play sports? I really needed God to help me on that test but I don't need Him to play." Before you know it you find yourself in an argument with a friend!

Here is another example: You come to church on Sunday morning and in Sunday School class you really depend on the Lord: "Lord, help me to pay attention in this class because the teacher might ask me a question and I want to do well and learn what I should!" After Sunday School you go to the morning worship service and you think to yourself: "I don't really need to ask God for help now, because during the service I just sit and no one is going to ask me anything." As you think back over the morning you realize that you learned much from your Sunday School class but you did not get much at all from the morning worship service!

How many fish did the disciples catch without the Lord (John 21:3)? None! And remember, these were experienced fishermen who really knew how to catch fish! How many did they catch with the help of the Lord Jesus (John 21:6, 8, 11)? A lot!

Trying to live the Christian life without the Holy Spirit is like trying to drive to New York City without a car! It's impossible! The Lord Jesus Christ wants to live out His life in every believer by the power of the Holy Spirit! We need to make sure that the FLESH (our old sinful self) does not get in the way!

"Channels Only, Blessed Master,
But with all Thy wondrous power,
Flowing through us, Thou canst use us,
Every day and every hour!"
--Mary Maxwell

Can you say in your heart: Thank you Lord Jesus for God the Holy Spirit! Thank you God the Holy Spirit for the Life of the Lord Jesus!

Vision in Action:

1. Discipline to Shift into Positive Mindset:
- Vision: To cultivate a mind that is consistently focused on the Holy Spirit's presence and power, seeing every challenge as an opportunity for His strength to be revealed.
- Application:
- Challenge: Identify one area where you feel powerless or inadequate in your spiritual life (e.g., resisting temptation, loving difficult people).
- Affirmation: Replace that feeling with the truth that "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13), empowered by the Holy Spirit.
- Action: Throughout the day, when that feeling arises, consciously declare the affirmation and ask the Holy Spirit to fill you with His power.
2. Develop Attitude of Gratitude:
- Vision: To live with a heart overflowing with thankfulness for the gift of the Holy Spirit and His constant presence in our lives.
- Application:
- Gratitude List: Write down three ways the Holy Spirit has helped you in the past week (e.g., comforted you, guided you, empowered you).
- Express Thanks: Take time to thank God specifically for each of these blessings.
- Share Gratitude: Share your gratitude with another person, encouraging them to seek the Holy Spirit's guidance in their lives.
3. Take Time to Contemplate:
- Vision: To create space for regular, meaningful connection with the Holy Spirit, allowing His wisdom to guide your thoughts and actions.
- Application:
- Quiet Time: Schedule 10-15 minutes each day to listen for the Holy Spirit's voice.
- Focus: During this time, focus on a specific question or area where you need guidance (e.g., "How can I better yield to the Spirit?").
- Journal: Record any insights or promptings you receive from the Holy Spirit.
4. Right System for Right Result:
- Vision: To establish habits and practices that consistently nurture your spiritual growth and draw you closer to the Holy Spirit.
- Application:
- Identify: Choose one area of your life where you want to experience more of the Holy Spirit's power (e.g., prayer, witnessing, serving).
- Create a System: Develop a specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goal related to that area (e.g., "I will pray for 15 minutes each day this week for the Holy Spirit to empower me for witnessing.").
- Implement: Put your system into action and track your progress, seeking the Holy Spirit's guidance and power along the way.

Self-Reflection:

- Do I truly believe that the Holy Spirit lives in me?
- How has my understanding of walking in the Spirit changed after reading this lesson?
- Am I actively seeking to yield to the Holy Spirit in all areas of my life?
- In what areas of my life am I grieving or quenching the Holy Spirit?
- How can I apply the four principles to make walking in the Spirit a reality in my daily life?

Life Application:

- Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal areas in your life where you are not fully surrendering to the Holy Spirit.
- Make a list of practical ways you can allow the Holy Spirit to guide you in your daily activities (at home, at school, with friends).
- Share this lesson with someone who may be struggling to walk in the Spirit.
- Start a journal to record your thoughts and experiences as you grow in your relationship with the Holy Spirit.
- Commit to implementing the action steps for each of the four principles.

Encouragement:

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. The Holy Spirit is with you, empowering you to live a life that is pleasing to God. Embrace the abundant life that Christ offers, and trust that He will guide you every step of the way. Keep seeking Him, and you will discover the joy and fulfillment that comes from walking in His Spirit.

CHAPTER 1: What Is Spiritual Life?

The Lord Jesus Christ once said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Jesus came so that we might have ABUNDANT LIFE and so that we might live TO THE FULLEST! Christ came so that we could live as God really intended for us to live. He came so that we could live a life that is abundant and full and overflowing!

Think about yourself and your friends and others that you know. Do they live life to the full? Do they enjoy living? Are they glad to wake up in the morning and wash and get dressed and have breakfast and brush their teeth and leave for school and sit in class and all the other things that we do over and over again, day after day? All these things that we do (such as eating and sleeping and sitting and walking and learning) are important, but is that what life is really all about? What is this abundant life that Christ talked about? What kind of life does the Lord give to His sheep (to those people who believe in Him--see John 10:27-28)?

The life that God gives is not only ABUNDANT and OVERFLOWING, but it is ETERNAL! What is ETERNAL LIFE? In John 17:3 Jesus said, "And this is eternal life, that they might know Thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom Thou has sent." This means that the person who has eternal life is the person who KNOWS GOD and who KNOWS THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! This person should have and can have a wonderful, personal relationship with God.

Does everyone know God (1 Thess. 4:5)? Does everyone have a close relationship and a personal relationship with Christ (Matthew 7:23)? Does everyone have eternal life (1 John 5:12)? Think again of the people you know who are living all around you (in your home, in your neighborhood, in your school, in your church). All of these people have physical life. They can walk and talk, laugh and cry, eat and sleep. They live and they exist, but most of these people do not have SPIRITUAL LIFE! Most of these people do not have ETERNAL LIFE! Most of these people are not LIVING TO THE FULL! Most of these people do not know God in a personal way. They do not have God the Holy Spirit living in them.

Think back upon the time when your Mother gave birth to you. When you were born, you received physical life. The doctor may have given you a firm pat on the back and you began to breathe and you soon began to eat, etc. YOU WERE ALIVE! When a person is born again into God's family (see John 3:3,5,6,7,8,16), he receives SPIRITUAL LIFE or ETERNAL LIFE. Suddenly the person who is born of the Spirit is able to talk to God (PRAYER), feed on God's Word (the Bible) and enjoy that close relationship with the living God. It makes a big difference when a person has SPIRITUAL LIFE! That person is able to bring God into every situation of life:

MY PARENTS "Lord, help me to be the best son (or daughter) I can be!"
GOING TO SCHOOL "Lord, I know the Lord can help me to learn many, many things from my teachers."
MY FRIENDS "They sure were not nice to me yesterday, but I know the Lord can help me to be friendly to them."
EATING "Thank you Lord for this food."
BRUSHING TEETH "I want to take care of my body because my body belongs to the Lord."
I'M ALIVE! I know God in a personal way.
I'M BORED "I wonder what God wants me to do right now."
STUDYING "God can help me to study and to do well on this test."
GOING TO BED "God knows that I need rest and He is able to take care of me through the night."

We have been thinking about SPIRITUAL LIFE. We should also think about SPIRITUAL DEATH. If a person is not alive, then he is dead! We know that this is true in the physical realm. The people who do not breathe, do not move, do not eat, and whose hearts do not beat--these people are DEAD! In Ephesians 2:1, the Bible says, "you were dead in trespasses and sins." These people are SPIRITUALLY DEAD. They do not know God (1 Thess. 4:5). Because of their sins, they are separated from God and they do not have any real relationship with the Lord. They do not have the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:9 and compare Jude 19). They do not have eternal life (1 John 5:12) and therefore they are dead!

The Lord Jesus Christ came so that we might have abundant life (John 10:10). He GAVE HIS LIFE and died so that we might have life (John 10:11). He rose again from the dead, because a dead Saviour could never give eternal life to anyone (John 10:28)! When a person believes on the Lord Jesus Christ they have ETERNAL LIFE (John 6:47) and they have passed from DEATH unto LIFE (John 5:24). The Spirit of God is able to take a dead person and make him alive (see John 6:63 and 2 Corinthians 3:6).

What is this LIFE that we have been learning about? In John 14:6, Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father but by Me." Jesus said, "I AM THE LIFE!" Life is found in Christ because HE IS OUR LIFE (see Colossians 3:4). If a person has the Son of God what else does he have (1 John 5:12)? If a person does not have the Son of God (if he has never received Him as Saviour and Lord), then he does not have life (1 John 5:12).

What is the Christian life? It is CHRIST IN YOU (Colossians 1:27). A Christian is one who has spiritual life. A Christian is one in whom Christ lives! Who is the One who lives in the Christian, according to Galatians 2:20? This is something that is true of every person who is a genuine Christian: "Jesus Christ is IN YOU" (2 Corinthians 13:5).

The Christian life is not trying to keep certain rules. The Christian life is not trying to keep the Ten Commandments. The Christian life is not trying to be good. Religious people can try to do these things. Dead people (those who do not know God) can try to do these things. The Christian life is "CHRIST IN YOU." It is Christ living His life in you by the power of His Holy Spirit.

For example, in 1 Corinthians 13:4, the Bible says that LOVE (charity) IS KIND. How can I be kind? Suppose I were to put my own name in this verse instead of the word "LOVE": (put your own name) is kind. Is this really true? If you are honest, you would admit that there are many, many times when you are not kind. Often we are very unkind and selfish! It would be more true to say: (write your own name) often is unkind. Now let's put the Lord's Name in this verse: "JESUS CHRIST is kind." Is this true? Yes. Is He ever unkind? No.

Now, how can I be kind? Remember, if you are a Christian, Christ is in you! Now let's try our verse one more time: "CHRIST IN ME is kind! CHRIST IN (write your own name) is kind!" Is this true? This is the secret of the Christian life! CHRIST IS OUR LIFE!

In the chapters which follow, we are going to study the Christian life and learn some very important things about growing, reading the Bible, praying, obeying and many other subjects that will help us in our Christian living. We must remember that the Christian life is CHRIST LIVING IN ME (Galatians 2:20) by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the next chapter we will learn more about the Holy Spirit and what He wants to do in our lives. I need to learn to not get in the way as I let Christ live His life in me.

Does Jesus Christ really live in you? Do you have the Son (1 John 5:12)? Do you have eternal life (John 3:16)? Does the Holy Spirit live in you (1 Corinthians 6:19)? According to Revelation 3:20, what is the Lord Jesus doing right now at the door of the unbeliever's heart? Knocking.

Usually, when a person knocks at a door, what does he want? (circle the correct one):

- a. He wants to say "hello" and then go away.
- b. He wants to come in (and he wants you to let him in).
- c. He wants to run away as soon as you open the door.

Have you let the Lord Jesus Christ come into your life? If you hear His voice and open the door, what does He promise to do (Revelation 3:20)? "I WILL COME IN to him!" Have you done your part? Has Christ done His part? How do you know? If the living Lord is in you, then you can be enjoying that ABUNDANT LIFE and can begin LIVING LIFE TO THE FULL!

Self-Reflection:

- Do I truly believe that Jesus Christ is living in me?
- How has my understanding of spiritual life changed after reading this lesson?
- Am I actively nurturing my relationship with God through prayer and reading the Bible?
- In what areas of my life am I hindering Christ from living through me?

Life Application:

- Spend time in prayer, asking God to reveal areas in your life where you are not fully surrendering to Him.
- Make a list of practical ways you can allow Christ to live through you in your daily activities (at home, at school, with friends).
- Share this lesson with someone who may be seeking a deeper understanding of spiritual life.
- Start a journal to record your thoughts and experiences as you grow in your relationship with Christ.

Encouragement:

Remember, you are not alone on this journey. The Holy Spirit is with you, empowering you to live a life that is pleasing to God. Embrace the abundant life that Christ offers, and trust that He will guide you every step of the way. Keep seeking Him, and you will discover the joy and fulfillment that comes from living in His presence.
