Signed into law in 2022, Republic Act (RA) 11699 officially established August 30 as National Press Freedom Day. This year, we celebrate its fourth observance: not just recognizing the current state of press freedom, but also reminding every journalist and all of us of the power we have to protect and exercise our fundamental right to free speech.
Historically and up to now, press freedom still finds itself battling against the forces of censorship, political pressure, and threats that constantly seek to silence the truth. But no amount of hostility, intimidation, or disinformation can ever cage the power of the press โ or the courage of those who bravely wield it in the name of journalism.
For as long as stories continue to be told, the press stays impenetrable โ no amount of bullets, money, or words can ever shatter its resolve.
