Depression Is Real as an OFW, But So Is God’s Presence
Being an OFW is not easy. We leave our families, our homes, and the people we love because we want to provide a better life for them. We smile on video calls and say, “Okay lang ako,” even when deep inside, we are tired, lonely, and hurting.
Depression is real. It is not a sign that you have weak faith. It does not mean you are a bad Christian. Even people who loved and trusted God deeply experienced moments of overwhelming sadness.
The Bible says in Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
God sees the OFW who cries alone after work.
God sees the mother who misses her children.
God sees the father who feels the pressure to provide.
God sees the worker who is exhausted but keeps going.
God sees the person who feels forgotten in a foreign land.
You may feel alone, but you are never alone in the presence of God.
Remember Elijah. After serving God faithfully, he became exhausted, afraid, and deeply discouraged. He even wanted to die. Yet God did not condemn him. God cared for him, allowed him to rest, gave him food, and gently reminded him that his journey was not over.
Sometimes, what we need is not another person telling us, “Magpakatatag ka.” Sometimes we need someone to sit with us, listen to us, and remind us: “Hindi ka nag-iisa. Kasama mo ang Diyos.”
Jesus Himself said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
So, dear OFW, you don't have to carry everything by yourself.
Pray when you can. Cry when you need to. Rest when you are tired. Talk to someone you trust. And if depression becomes overwhelming, seeking professional help is not a lack of faith. God can work through counselors, doctors, pastors, friends, and family.
Your life is more valuable than the money you send home.
Your worth is not measured by how much you earn.
Your value is not determined by how strong you appear.
You are God's beloved child.
And even in the darkest season, hold on to the promise of Isaiah 41:10:
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you.”
Maybe today you are far from home, but you are never far from God.
Kapit lang, kabayan. Hindi ka nakakalimutan ng Diyos. May pag-asa pa. May bukas pa.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
