Three youth representatives from Gusa Elementary School, East Gusa National High School, Gusa Regional Science High School โ€“ X, and the Sixers Organization for Youthful Achievements actively participated in the PHINLA Youth Eco Advocates Orientation held last July 29โ€“30, 2025, at Hamersons Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

This two-day seminar, organized under the PHINLA (Philippines, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka) initiative and facilitated by the PHINLA Citizens Voice in Action Core Team, focused on the crucial topic of Solid Waste Management (SWM). Participants received a warm welcome and were engaged in informative discussions emphasizing the importance of proper waste segregation and responsible handling, whether in schools or within the community.

The orientation aimed to deepen the youthโ€™s understanding of environmental responsibility, encouraging them to reflect on the consequences of improper waste disposal. It also provided a platform for participants to share their best practices related to waste management, both in school and in the community. This exchange of ideas sparked inspiration among the attendees, allowing them to adopt simple yet impactful solutions they could implement in their own surroundings.

The event culminated in the election of the Youth Eco Advocates (YEA) Core Team. Elected as Chairperson was Ms. Gayle G. Escobido from Gusa Regional Science High School โ€“ X. She was joined by Mr. Ian Jayson Y. Galia as Vice Chairperson, Ms. Nickee T. Dampal as Secretary, and Ms. Princess Ahlia D. Blanela as Treasurer, all also from Gusa Regional Science High School โ€“ X. In addition, focal persons were appointed to represent the youth sectors of Barangay Gusa, Barangay Cugman, Barangay F.S. Catanico, and Barangay Tablon.

Implemented by EcoWaste Coalition and World Vision, and in partnership with German Cooperation, PHINLA continues to empower young leaders in building a future that is zero-waste and free from toxic pollutants. With their active involvement, the youth are taking bold steps in promoting effective and sustainable waste management systems across their communities.

Todayโ€™s a little reminder to pause and appreciate those whoโ€™ve been with us through the highs, lows, and everything in between. In the rush of life, we sometimes forget to say โ€œthank youโ€ or โ€œIโ€™m here.โ€ So message a friend, share a memory, or simply show up โ€” because real friendship doesnโ€™t need grand gestures, just real presence. Cheers to the ones who stay loyal and true.
