The carbon-based economy led humans to develop their ways of living. They have become reliant on fuming cars, factory made goods, and other convenient services that call for the destruction of nature. In the middle of progressing they have forgotten to balance their desires with the limited resources on the planet, causing many problems in the environment such as air pollution.
On estimate, humans are powered by breathing air in and out 22,000 times a day. However, just like how it's invisible to the eye, the air humans breathe affects them in ways they could never imagine. The formula is not as easy as having humans inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. In reality, oxygen is just one of the many particles in the air that humans inhale, together with leftover bits of fossil fuel.
In China, the worldโs biggest miner and consumer of coal. People breathe dangerous gases leading to pulmonary diseases and respiratory infections in exchange for being called the worldโs manufacturing hub. Data suggests that over 2 million people die in the country annually due to air pollution. In its capital city Beijing, the government has made efforts to improve air quality however; smog is a problem that is hard to fix with just a few policies.
Smog has become one of the leading causes of lung cancer. Apart from being a combination of smoke and fog, this is a mixture of particulates and gases. Some of these particulates when inhaled cannot be filtered in the respiratory tract due to its volume. This causes them to interfere with other parts of the body including the bloodstream and from there, complications arise.
According to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), โFine particle pollution is an important factor in deaths from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, lower respiratory infections, stroke, tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer and ischemic heart disease. It is also a contributing factor on type 2 diabetes and neonatal disorders.โ
Another story unveils in India where an estimate of 3,000 people die every day due to air pollution. In an interview with PBS America, Dr. Arvind Kumar, Chairman at the Institute of Chest Surgery- Chest Onco Surgery and Lung Transplantation in Medanta, the issue has gotten worse that in over 30 years of doing lung surgery, it was now rare to see healthy and pink lungs, not even in childrenโs cases.
โNo one in India is a non-smokerโ Kumar says after stating that the air quality in New Delhi is equivalent to smoking 20 to 25 ci******es a day.
All over the world, several experts continue to study air pollution. Some conduct it in places with well isolated environmental conditions like New Zealand while some study it through the urbanized cities of North America. Some also study it through their life experiences with those affected by it just like Dr. Kumar.
โYou can have the most expensive water bottle in your pocket but you cannot have expensive air with you.โ he states in the interview.
Although the causes of air pollution vary from one location to another, they all stem from one thingโopportunism. To leave behind selfish intentions to preserve the planet may save the human race.
