🦠🌊 Antibiotic Resistance Found in a Polluted River Estuary

A study in the Tapak River estuary in Semarang City revealed the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria linked to domestic and industrial pollution. Researchers analyzed sediment samples and discovered bacteria that could resist ciprofloxacin, a commonly used antibiotic. One isolate was closely related to Bacillus licheniformis, a bacterium known to survive in harsh environments.

⚠️ Why this matters:
Polluted waters can become breeding grounds for antibiotic resistance, which threatens aquatic life and human health. The findings highlight the urgent need for regular monitoring of coastal and estuarine areas to prevent the uncontrolled spread of resistant bacteria.

🌱🌾 Boosting Soil Health with Microbial-Enriched Compost!

This study tested a microbial-enriched compost (MEC) made from farm residues like corn stover and wild sunflower, enriched with beneficial fungi (Trichoderma harzianum). The goal? To see how it affects soil quality and the growth of foxtail millet.

πŸ” What did the researchers find?
βœ… The compost was mature and safe for crops
βœ… Soil health improvedβ€”organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium all increased
βœ… Soil acidity slightly improved
🚫 Plant height and growth timing of foxtail millet stayed the same, meaning yields weren’t negatively affected

πŸ’‘ Why it matters:
Using microbial-enriched compost can restore soil nutrients and health while reducing reliance on purely chemical fertilizersβ€”supporting more sustainable farming practices.

πŸ˜·πŸ€– Smarter Facemask Detection for Safer Public Spaces!

Accurately detecting whether people are wearing facemasks is crucial in hospitals, workplaces, and other areas with strict health protocols. This study improved facemask detection using advanced AI transfer learning techniques with two powerful models β€” ResNet50 and MobileNetV2 β€” trained on 15,005 labeled images.

πŸ“Š How well did it work?
βœ… 99.1% accuracy for detecting masked individuals
βœ… 98.8% accuracy for detecting unmasked individuals
βœ… Significant improvement (+5.47%) over traditional methods
ResNet50 excelled in overall accuracy, recall, and specificity, while MobileNetV2 delivered top precision scores.

πŸ’‘ Why it matters:
This AI-powered approach boosts the reliability of public health monitoring, offering a strong foundation for automated surveillance tools that help prevent the spread of airborne diseases.

πŸ’§β˜€οΈ Solar-Powered Water Monitoring for Remote Areas!

This study developed an energy-autonomous water-quality monitoring system that runs entirely on solar powerβ€”no electricity grid needed. Using an ESP32-LoRa setup, the device measures pH, turbidity, TDS, and temperature and sends the data wirelessly for real-time viewing on the web.

πŸ” How well does it work?
All sensors were carefully calibrated, and their readings closely matched laboratory standardsβ€”temperature was even accurate to within 0.5%. The system’s web dashboard updated measurements reliably, even with weak or intermittent connectivity.

🌱 Why it matters:
This low-cost, long-range, solar-powered design is ideal for rural and remote communities, helping monitor water quality continuously without manual sampling or expensive infrastructure.

πŸ¦†πŸŒΎ Feeding Ducks Smarter (and Cheaper!)

This study tested three types of diet formulations for ItikPINAS-Itim ducksβ€”based on actual, intermediate, and published energy values of common feeds like corn, rice bran, and soybean meal.

πŸ‘‰ What did they find?
All ducks grew just as well regardless of diet type. But those fed diets based on actual (AV) and intermediate (IV) energy values:
βœ… Ate more feed
βœ… Had better feed conversion
βœ… Andβ€”most importantlyβ€”cost less to grow (lower feed costs overall)

Leg and bone measurements were also similar across groups, meaning growth wasn’t impacted.

πŸ’‘ Takeaway: Using actual or intermediate energy values helps farmers create more cost-efficient duck diets without affecting duck performanceβ€”great news for ItikPINAS-Itim growers!

Recognizing excellence fairly and efficiently is key to fostering motivation and continuous improvement among student organizations. In a newly published paper in the Mindanao Journal of Science and Technology (Scopus- and Web of Science-indexed), π‘πžπ²π¦πšπ«π€ 𝐏. 𝐌𝐚π₯𝐒𝐧𝐝𝐚 from the Development Communication Department, College of Arts and Sciences, Bukidnon State University (BukSU), along with researchers from the University of Science and Technology of Southern Philippines – Cagayan de Oro, introduces a data-driven approach to evaluating student organization performance. The study implemented a mathematical approach, particularly Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to ensure a fair and objective recognition process in the USTP Kahamili Awards. Findings revealed that the Constant Returns to Scale (CRS) model provided the best fit, enabling a more accurate and systematic assessment of organizational efficiency. This research underscores how innovative, data-based evaluation systems can promote transparency, fairness, and continuous development in higher education institutions.

The BukSU community commends the author's outstanding scholarly work. Congratulations!

πŸ†βœ¨ Celebrating Excellence at USTP CDO!

The USTP Kahamili Awards honor outstanding student organizations, but traditional manual evaluations can be biased or inefficient. This study introduced a data-driven approach using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to objectively measure efficiency. πŸ“Š

Results for Academic Year 2021–2022 showed three academic and three non-academic organizations performing exceptionally well. Benchmarking also highlighted areas where other organizations can improve and grow.

Using DEA, the university can now recognize excellence fairly while providing insights for continuous improvement across all student groups. 🌟

⚑🏭 Smarter Industrial Drying with Web-Enabled SCADA!

Keeping industrial processes running smoothly means reliable power and real-time monitoring. This study developed a web-based SCADA system that can control, monitor, and collect data from industrial dryers β€” all in real time! πŸ’»πŸ“Š

βœ… Tracks power use and drying conditions
βœ… Generates accurate datasets for analysis
βœ… Improves accessibility and cost-effectiveness

Results show the system is reliable, secure, and scalable for industrial use, helping factories predict power needs, avoid faults, and optimize operations β€” without expensive specialized hardware. πŸŒ±βš™οΈ

πŸπŸ’§ Genes and Milk: Finding the Better Milk Producers Among Goats!

Did you know that the amount of milk your goat produces could be written in its genes? 🧬 This study looked at a specific gene called CSN2, which helps produce casein, a protein found in milk. Researchers tested 101 crossbred Anglo-Nubian dairy goats to see if tiny genetic differences (called single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) in this gene affect milk yield.

They discovered two versions of the gene β€” AA and AA1. Goats with the AA version produced more milk (about 0.87 L per day) than those with the AA1 version (about 0.65 L per day). πŸ₯›

The results suggest that breeding goats with the AA gene could help farmers raise goats that give more milk β€” a simple yet powerful insight for improving dairy production! 🌿

πŸ‹πŸ”¬ Turning Mango Peels into Industrial Enzyme Supports!

Cellulase β€” an enzyme with many industrial uses β€” becomes even more useful when it can be reused efficiently. This study explored how to immobilize cellulase using pectin extracted from mango peels 🍈 as a natural, low-cost support material.

By testing different calcium chloride concentrations and curing times, researchers found that 2% CaClβ‚‚ for 10 minutes gave the best results β€” achieving a 93% immobilization efficiency! πŸ’ͺ

The findings show that mango peel pectin can effectively hold and stabilize enzymes, reducing waste and cost while making enzyme-based processes more sustainable. πŸŒ±βš™οΈ
