Research Publication of the Day!

LOOK: Can backyard pig farms affect the water we rely on underground? 🐖💧 On the Tabok Peninsula in Northwestern Leyte, backyard pig farms release slurry (animal waste) into natural sinkhole ponds called doline ponds—which are crucial for recharging groundwater. This study analyzed water quality in ponds with and without pig slurry and found no major negative impact yet. But there’s a catch: ponds receiving waste showed higher salt content and alkalinity, hinting at early signs of nutrient buildup. Interestingly, plants growing in those ponds (macrophytes) may be helping absorb excess nutrients—nature doing a bit of cleanup! 🌱 Still, with more pig farms emerging, the study recommends close monitoring and protection of these vital water sources under local water quality programs.

Research Publication of the Day!

LOOK: Building a strong foundation starts beneath the surface! 🏗️🌍 This study used GIS mapping and borehole data to assess soil bearing capacity in Butuan City, providing crucial insights for safer infrastructure and smarter urban planning. Using data from Standard Pe*******on Tests (SPT), the team created detailed maps showing how strong the soil is at different depths. Among the mapping methods tested, Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) was the most accurate for predicting soil strength—even with limited data. With bearing capacity values ranging up to 238.31 kPa, these maps give engineers and city planners a reliable tool for early design decisions. Better data = better, safer buildings!

Research Publication of the Day!

LOOK: Did you know the Philippines is home to many native fruit trees that aren’t widely documented—but are packed with traditional value? 🌳🍇 This study explored 7 indigenous fruit tree species in Region IV-A (CALABARZON), like Katmon, Kalumpit, Lipote, and Libas, by interviewing over 260 locals. The researchers discovered that these trees are not only eaten fresh but are also used for medicine and practical purposes—from treating illnesses to making tools! For instance, Tibig (Ficus nota) was the most widely recognized, while Katmon (Dillenia philippinensis) had the most diverse uses. The findings highlight just how rich our ethnobotanical heritage is—and why it’s crucial to preserve and promote local knowledge about these underutilized but valuable natural resources.
