DISCERNING OF SPIRITS.
"...to another discerning of spirits" (1 Corinthians 12:10 NKJV).
The third revelation gift is the discerning of spirits. This is the supernatural ability given by the Holy Spirit to perceive and identify the spiritual source behind a manifestation, a statement, or a situation. It allows you to know whether something is of God, of the human spirit, or of demonic origin.
Notice it is not called "discerning of people" or "discerning of faults." It is the discerning of spirits. This gift operates in the spiritual realm. It gives you insight into the spiritual forces at work behind what is happening in the natural.
The Apostle Paul demonstrated this gift in Acts 16:16-18 when he encountered a slave girl who had a spirit of divination. She followed Paul and Silas, saying, "These men are the servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to us the way of salvation." What she said was technically true, but Paul discerned by the Spirit that her words were not coming from the Holy Spirit — they were coming from a demonic spirit. He turned and cast the spirit out.
This gift is vital for the Church today. Not everything that looks spiritual is from God. Not every prophecy is genuine. Not every miracle is divine. The discerning of spirits allows you to see beyond the surface and identify the true spiritual source behind manifestations.
How do you cultivate this gift? Stay close to the Word and to the Spirit. The more familiar you are with the genuine, the easier it becomes to spot the counterfeit. A bank teller does not study every possible counterfeit note — they study the real thing so thoroughly that anything fake stands out immediately. That is how it works in the Spirit. Fill yourself with the truth, and deception will become obvious. Hallelujah!
PRAYER
Dear Father, I thank You for the gift of discerning of spirits. I can perceive and identify the spiritual source behind every manifestation. I am not deceived by appearances, for the Holy Spirit gives me insight into the spiritual realm. I discern between the genuine and the counterfeit, and I walk in spiritual clarity at all times, in Jesus' Name. Amen.
