So excited to share โœจMaskaraโœจ, a zine born from a shared love for vintage bootleg palengke masks!

Erv Saguiped, the founder of the amazing Vintage Ju**ie Manila and Karma Collective Manila (and a dedicated thrifter and hoarder since โ€˜04!), has poured his passion into curating this collection.

Each pencil-signed and numbered riso-printed zine is bound with a rubber band, a nod to how we used to wear these iconic masks as kids.

If youโ€™re a fellow Palengke mask enthusiast, weโ€™d love to connect and talk about it!

Maria-Ni(cole) Ikonomou

โ€œI am a self-taught illustrator, maximalist, and q***r Third Culture Kid, born in Australia and living in Brooklyn. My artwork explores the in-between and other-worldly spaces, the feelings you canโ€™t quite name, and the things that arenโ€™t as they first appear to be. For the last 1.5 years, Iโ€™ve been working on a project called โ€œAffirmations I wish I told myself when I was younger,โ€ a series of 15 drawings and companion diary entries that explores the question: if you could meet your child self, what would you say?

Iโ€™ve had chronic pain in my hands for about ten years; my process is slow, shaky, and still my salvation. Iโ€™m a ghost writer by day but drawing lets me speak when words arenโ€™t enough.โ€

Iโ€™ve always wondered what my household trinkets get up to when I go to sleep ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿ›Œ๐ŸŒŒ๐Ÿงธ๐ŸŽช๐ŸŒˆ๐ŸŽˆ๐Ÿช„๐Ÿชž๐Ÿ’ž These are the things that make my house my home (my heart)

tl;dr ๐Ÿ’Œ๐Ÿ—๏ธ We moved around a lot growing up and lived in a lot of places. Every house was different but our furniture and trinkets came with us every time. We didnโ€™t have a particular city to call โ€œhome,โ€ but I knew how I felt when I saw our things. My friends! Weโ€™re here. Weโ€™re home.

My face is beautiful when I am understood.

tl;dr I think that everyone you meet is kind of like a mirror. They pull out different parts of you, make different parts of you feel seen. You get to decide who lives in your fun house ๐ŸŽช

Vyolet Jin is an award-winning Chinese illustrator based in New York. She loves to break the rules by drawing her subjects through a playful lens, turning ordinary objects into whimsical, not-so-serious forms. Her work captures emotional energy and transforms it into blooming, chaotic fireworks.

Vyolet is most inspired by her own emotions and feelings โ€” from self-doubt to joy โ€” as seen in her Unconfident Girl series. She also draws from small, charming details in everyday life, like those found in The Heart Diary, blending vulnerability and cuteness into vivid, character-driven worlds.

Owen Madigan - โ€œI am born and raised New Yorker who graduated from The Pratt Institute in May 2022 with a BFA in Photography. I have created work in the fields of film, collage, silkscreen, and sound. My art practice is incredibly influenced by the way my city moves and the fleeting moments that I am able to experience in it. An integral part of it is transforming it into editions of zines or photo books.โ€œ

Celest Laviรฑa is an interdisciplinary artist from Manila, endlessly exploring her special interest in colorful, playful experimental art and music. She plays around with different mediums, traditional or digital, letting each moment guide her process. Her work is deeply inspired by the raw beauty and magic of living her most authentic and spiritually-rooted life filled with nature, friendship, divine energy, and love despite the chaos. Her vibrant creations serve as psychedelic portals that reveal the whimsical world of wonder that already exists around us - only if we choose to notice, look closely and listen carefully.

Look into her Sun & Moon Portals to catch a glimpse of one of her lifeโ€™s most pivotal moments โ€” living in Zambales with her friends, her found family. These prints are a love letter to the sacred stillness and surreal joy of finding a nature sanctuary during the peak of the pandemic, truly a tough time for everyone. Each layer holds fragments of that journey, a chapter that shaped her into the person she is today.

โ€œBuhay-Patay-Buhayโ€, 2020

โ€œBuhay - Patay - Buhayโ€ (Life - Death - Life) is inspired by the agimat and the anting-anting, a Filipino system of sorcery and the arcane with special use of charms and talismans. It plays on the idea of reincarnation, where it refers to the belief that an aspect of all living beings continue to exist after death. Filipinos believe that when you have agimat, you will be protected from harm and evil.
