Can This P150-Billion Mega-Airport Finally Replace NAIA?
NEW MANILA AIRPORT BREAKS GROUND IN 2026, SET TO WELCOME 100 MILLION PASSENGERS BY 2028
MANILA — The long-awaited New Manila International Airport (NMIA) in Bulacan is finally taking off—construction is now set to begin in January 2026, with full operations eyed by late 2028.
Backed by San Miguel Aerocity Inc., a unit of San Miguel Corporation, the P873-billion ($15 billion) mega-project aims to decongest the overworked Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) and serve up to 100 million passengers annually—more than double NAIA’s current capacity.
The airport will rise on 2,500 hectares of reclaimed land along Manila Bay in Bulakan, Bulacan—just 4 kilometers north of Navotas. Once complete, it will feature 4 parallel runways, 240 boarding gates, and cutting-edge terminals with seamless road and rail access.
Why the delay?
The project hit a snag due to delays in sourcing reclamation materials, particularly sand, pushing its groundbreaking by a year. But with logistics resolved, the team is back on track.
The bigger picture
NMIA is part of a broader plan to future-proof Philippine aviation. MRT-7 extensions and new expressways are in the pipeline to connect the airport to Metro Manila. Over 1 million jobs are expected to be generated during construction and operations.
NAIA currently handles over 45 million passengers a year, despite being designed for only 30 million. Even with upgrades, its cap is 62 million. NMIA is seen as the country’s boldest answer to crippling air congestion.
